My A to Y of British Birds. Today we have reached the Letter M, and first up is the Magpie. Perhaps a bit of a Marmite bird, there are people who love them and people who don’t. For some people there is some superstition which can involve saluting a single Magpie which will the avoid the “One for Sorrow” from the saying. Here comes your RSPB info. Group: Crows UK Conservation status:Green How to identify With its noisy chattering, black-and-white plumage and long tail, there's nothing else quite like the Magpie in the UK. When seen close-up, its black plumage reveals a purplish-blue iridescent sheen to the wing feathers and a green gloss to the tail. Magpies seem to be jacks of all trades – scavengers, predators and pest-destroyers. Non-breeding birds will gather together in flocks. * Beak, Black * Conservation status, Green * Diet, Omnivore and scavenger. * Feather, Green, Blue, Black, White * Leg, Black * Length, 44-46cm * Habitats, Woodland, Upland, Urban and Suburban, Farmland, Heathland, Wetland, Grassland * UK breeding birds, 600,000 territories * Weight, 200-250g * Wingspan, 52-60cm #magpie #birds #naturelovers #rspb #wildlifephotography

My A to Y of British Birds. Quack quack 🦆 what’s that I can hear 👂 well it’s the Mallard, the only duck species that makes the quack sound. I’ve slipped an extra pic in today as the Ducklings are just oozing cuteness on this post. And now for the RSPB info. Group: Ducks, geese and swans UK Conservation status:Not assessed How to identify The Mallard is a large and heavy-looking duck. It has a long body, and a long and broad bill. The male has a dark green head, a yellow bill, is mainly purple-brown on the breast and grey on the body. The female is mainly brown with an orange bill. Mallards breed in all parts of the UK in summer and winter, wherever there are suitable wetland habitats, although it is rarer in upland areas. In the UK, Mallards may be resident breeders or migrants – many of the birds that breed in Iceland and northern Europe spend the winter here. * Conservation status, Not assessed * Diet, Seeds, acorns and berries, plants, insects and shellfish. * Leg, Brown, Orange * Length, 51-62cm * Habitats, Urban and Suburban, Marine and Intertidal, Farmland, Wetland, Grassland * UK breeding birds, 61,000-145,000+ pairs * UK wintering, 675,000 birds * Weight, 750-1500g * Wingspan, 81-98cm #mallard #ducks #birds #naturelovers #rspb
