Masters of the Universe opens tonight — and the business math behind it is one of the most important stories of the summer. Here is the full breakdown 👇💰 The budget problem 💸 Masters of the Universe was made on an estimated production budget of $170 million — and based on the standard 2.5x multiplier rule, the film needs to earn $425 million worldwide just to break even. That is before a single dollar of profit is made. 🔥 The projection problem 📊 The film is currently projecting a $25 to $40 million domestic opening weekend — a muted start for a $170 million blockbuster. For comparison — Project Hail Mary carried a similar $200 million budget, opened to $80.5 million domestically and went on to earn $655 million worldwide, crossing its break-even point comfortably. Masters of the Universe needs a similar trajectory. Current tracking suggests it will not get there. 👀 The reviews vs reality problem 🍅 The film holds a 74% Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes — critics genuinely like it. But positive reviews are simply not translating into ticket purchases — which is the exact same fatal combination that killed Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves in 2023, which earned 91% on Rotten Tomatoes but only made $208 million on a $150 million budget. The Scary Movie problem 😬 The film most likely to beat Masters of the Universe this weekend is Scary Movie 6 — tracking near $50 million — made for a fraction of the budget with no franchise pressure attached. A parody comedy is outpacing a $200 million blockbuster. That is a significant warning sign. The bigger picture 🎬 The property spent years cycling through Netflix, Warner Bros. and Sony — with directors Jon M. Chu and McG and stars like Noah Centineo all attached at various points — before Amazon MGM finally got it made in 2024. After a decades-long journey to the screen — He-Man deserves an audience. Whether that audience shows up tonight is the only question that matters now. Mortal Kombat II hits theaters this Friday — but first, here is everything that happened in the 2021 film you need to know 👇🎮 Cole Young is a struggling MMA fighter who discovers he was born with a dragon mark — a symbol that means he has been chosen to defend Earthrealm against the forces of Outworld. Outworld has already won nine of ten Mortal Kombat tournaments. One more loss and Earthrealm falls. Sorcerer Shang Tsung sends his warriors — including the ice-powered assassin Sub-Zero — to eliminate Earthrealm’s champions before the tournament even begins. Cole teams up with Sonya Blade, Jax, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and the mercenary Kano — training at Raiden’s temple to unlock their Arcana — a unique power each champion carries within them. Cole eventually discovers he is a direct descendant of the legendary ninja Hanzo Hasashi — and when Sub-Zero comes for him, Cole uses Hanzo’s blade to summon his ancestor back from the Netherrealm as Scorpion to fight by his side. Earthrealm survives — but the final scene shows Cole heading to Hollywood to recruit one more champion. Johnny Cage. 👀 Mortal Kombat II is in theaters this Friday. Are you watching opening weekend?
