Parents are not taught how to process emotions. We are not handed a rule book when our children come to us hurting. We are not taught what to say when they are anxious, angry, overwhelmed, shut down, dysregulated or trying to tell us in their own way that they are not okay. So many of us are parenting from the very tools we were never given ourselves. We are learning how to listen, how to pause, how to validate, how to stay regulated, how to sit in discomfort, and how to stop rushing in to fix something when what our child may actually need is to feel heard. Sometimes the most powerful thing we can say is, “I believe you. I am here. You do not have to carry this alone.” These conversations are not easy, especially when they touch on mental health, grief and suicide. But they are necessary, because silence does not protect our children. Connection does. Content note: grief, mental health and suicide. This part of my conversation with Jason King really stayed got me in the heart space ❤️ He speaks about walking past Jordan’s bedroom door and pausing there. That moment of knowing there was a conversation to be had, but not quite knowing how to have it. And the heartbreak of hindsight. The “what if I knocked?” The “what if I went in?” The questions no parent should ever have to carry. But what I love about Jason is that he does not share this from a place of blame. He shares it with honesty, softness and the hope that it may help another parent, another young person, or another family. Because sometimes the hardest conversations are the ones we most need to have. With our children. With the people we love. And sometimes, with ourselves. Your child may not need advice. They may just need to know you are on their team. In this clip from RAW with J, I speak about the importance of listening, validating and understanding our children when they are having a hard time. So often, as parents, we want to jump in and fix the problem. We want to give advice, move them through it, or make the feeling go away because it is uncomfortable to sit with. But sometimes our children do not need us to fix it straight away. Sometimes they need us to say, “I’m on your team. I’ve got you.” One of the most powerful questions we can ask is, “Do you need me to help you, do you want advice, or do you just need me to sit and listen?” Because big feelings can be uncomfortable. Hard conversations can be uncomfortable. But connection often starts when our children feel heard, believed and understood.
