Do you have to LIKE an exercise to teach it? Or could the exercises we avoid be the ones that help us grow the most? What exercises did you not want to teach or feel uncomfortable teaching, and eventually taught it?? Or do you still not teach it?? Welcome to another episode of Conversations with Others! LINK in bio for the full video This time, I’m sitting down with Katelin N., a reformer instructor I’ve had the pleasure of training. We started joking about how much she enjoys torturing her clients, and our conversation turned into something I think every instructor can relate to. Katelin shares why she needs to genuinely enjoy an exercise to teaching it. Can you guess one of the exercises she does not like?? I shared a little confession of my own during this conversation. I used to avoid teaching Praying Mantis (Spider Lunge) because It was takes a lot to cue and most people don’t get into the position correctly even after demonstrating it before class. Until one day, I asked myself: What if the reason I’m avoiding it is exactly why I should teach it? Sometimes, growth isn’t about learning something new. It’s about challenging what we already think we know. And sometimes, the best teachers are the ones willing to become students again. Of course, the conversation ends with me volunteering to let Katelin torture ME by teaching me exercises she doesn’t enjoy. Conversations with Others - Real conversations. Different perspectives. Shared growth. #ConversationsWithOthers #ReformerPilates #xformertrainer #reformerpilatesinstructor #modernpilates

Just because you’ve said it once doesn’t mean your clients have heard it. As instructors, we sometimes forget just how much we’re asking our clients to process during a workout. Their breathing. Their alignment. Their muscle engagement. Their coordination. And let’s not forget the shakes and burn. Welcome back to another episode of Conversations with Others! I’m sitting down with Katelin N., an instructor I’ve had the pleasure of training, to discuss something that can make a HUGE difference in how we teach. Our conversation started with something as simple as tucking the chin and evolved into a discussion about scapular retraction during plank exercises like Ab Wheel, Saw, Panther, Bear, etc. Katelin brought up an important point: “We are asking them to do a lot.” And she’s absolutely right. With so much happening physically and mentally during an exercise, even the simplest reminders can make a difference. Sometimes, effective teaching isn’t about giving more information. It’s about knowing WHAT to say, WHEN to say it, and WHY it matters. Aka read the room. Because our job isn’t just to guide movement. It’s to help people understand and feel what they’re doing. Instructors: Do you find yourself repeating the same cues throughout class? Or do you worry about sounding repetitive? I’m interested to hear your perspectives. For the full video, link in bio! Instructors: Are you team Donkey Kick or team no thanks? Katelin N. and I discovered something we have in common… Neither of us is a fan of Donkey Kick! And that brings up an interesting conversation… Just because an exercise exists, does that mean we HAVE to teach it? No. I don’t teach all exercises I’ve learned. If you’re skipping Donkey Kick, what exercise are you teaching instead? For the full video, link in bio! Conversations with Others: Real conversations. Different perspectives.
