I Built a Camera Rig That Drops the Camera 📱 ••• CASETiFY wanted me to test their Ultra Impact cases for the iPhone 18 Pro series, which gave me an idea: what could I film while the camera itself was falling? I designed and 3D printed a release mechanism to drop objects alongside a recording phone. The challenge was releasing everything together while keeping the subject in frame, all while putting the case's drop protection to the test.. When it works, the objects look like they’re floating while the entire workshop moves around them. The phone survived every drop ••• @CASETiFY #ad #Engineering #3DPrinting
The Dino Jump Mechanism ••• I thought it would be coolest if the jump mechanism is completely mechanical, so when you press the button your force directly causes the Dino to Jump. The press pulls a bike cable through a tube bumping a counterweighted seesaw that launches him up. Then there's a little wedge with two sliding pawls that make it a single tap, so you can't just hold the button down and cheat. One press only gets you one jump like the real game. ••• This was nowhere near my first version though. I tried a solenoid, a four-bar linkage, a vertical slider, and a bunch of counterbalance setups that either floated him or wouldn't let him jump at all. I'll get into all of that in the full build video. Next he needs something to jump over. Stay tuned! ••• #engineering #mechanicalengineering #3dprinting #mechanisms #maker
Building an Infinite Floor for a Real-Life Chrome Dino Game ••• Before the dino can jump over anything, I needed the ground to scroll forever. So I built a 56-segment 3D printed conveyor belt with embedded magnets for the obstacles. The belt runs on an aluminum extrusion spine, but the panels were drooping between the drive wheels, so I added V-wheels to each segment that ride along guide rails and turn it into a smooth, solid playing surface. A NEMA 23 motor drives the belt, and a sliding tensioner keeps everything tight so the panels don’t skip. Now the floor scrolls by satisfyingly smooth. Next step: make the dino jump. ••• #engineering #mechanicaldesign #mechanicalengineer #chromedino
Is this perpetual motion? ••• Physics says that perpetual motion is impossible because there is always some kinetic energy being lost to heat due to friction. So how is it that the ball is always returning to the same point on the track? ••• Beneath the cover is some cheeky electronics that tell an electro magnet to turn on and off at exactly the right time to keep the ball moving. This magnet is silently adding energy in to the system, giving the illusion of perpetual motion! ••• #perpetualmotion #physics #engineering #learnphysics #arduino #arduinoproject #physicsfun #perpetual #learnengineering
Some “practical” applications for the 7 segment display ••• Maybe it’s a dice that can be used while playing table top games. Or connect it to the internet and use it as a counter for your online store or social media following. Or of course, you put 4 of them together with the colon separator, add a real time clock module, and you have yourself a fully functioning clock. If you want to get really crazy, add a couple more modules, and you can actually track seconds as well. ••• All the files for this project (including some sample code to get you started with Arduino) are available on my website, or free for my Thangs members. Link is in bio. ••• #mechanicalengineering #clock #engineering #3dprinting #arduino #electronics

Mechanical Counter Reset - Chrome Dino IRL Part 6 ••• I redesigned the score counter for my Chrome Dino game so it can reset instantly instead of counting all the way backwards. Each number wheel has a butt-shaped cam that brings it back to zero when a follower pushes against it, but getting the connecting gears to disengage and reconnect in the right order took a few iterations. The mechanism now holds the wheels at zero until the gears reconnect, then releases the followers so it’s ready to count again. I scaled it up to all five digits and added a servo to the paddle, and the original counter can still keep the high score. ••• #engineezy #engineering #3dprinting #mechanicaldesign
This score system has a fatal flaw - IRL Chrome Dino Part 5 ••• I built this mechanical counter to keep score for my real life Chrome Dino game using five number wheels linked together by Geneva gears. Each time one wheel makes a full rotation, it advances the next wheel by a single digit, so I only need to turn the first wheel to make the whole thing count. It’s really satisfying to watch, but the only way to reset it is to run everything backwards, which takes forever with a high score. So next I need a way to reset all five numbers at once. ••• #engineering #3dprinting #mechanicaldesign
I Built a Robot That Can Draw Giant Images on the Beach ••• I started with what was basically a glorified RC tank and turned it into a robot that can autonomously draw massive images in the sand. I added GPS to make it navigate accurately, then used Codex to build an app that converts an SVG into GPS coordinates for the rover to follow. After a bunch of testing and some real-time troubleshooting on the beach, I was finally able to supersize my logo and have the robot draw it autonomously. ••• @ChatGPT #ChatGPT_Partner #egnineering #robotics
The Cactus Randomizer - IRL Chrome Dino Part 4 ••• Check out SOLIDWORKS for Makers in my profile and use code ENGINEEZY for 20% off @solidworks @Dassault Systèmes ••• By adding two more cactus magazines and connecting them onto a belt driven slider, I’m now able to change the magazine that is taking the object off of the conveyor belt. Selecting these magazines at random allows me to fully randomize the objects. Then I was able to add a gate system that can choose whether to drop a single object or a double object onto the belt. These two things combined to create an unpredictable game. ••• #engineering #mechanicalengineering #solidworks #engineeringstudent #learnengineering
The Cactus Magazine - Chrome Dino IRL Part 3 ••• The obstacles magnet onto the 3D printed conveyor belt, and if they just rode around in a loop the game would be the same sequence forever. So at the end of the belt, these ramps passively pull each obstacle off and drop it into a ten-sided indexing wheel. Every drop ratchets the wheel forward one slot, which pushes the next obstacle up to the top of the queue, ready to go back into the game. ••• The original plan was a gantry-style pick-and-place that would grab obstacles and set them on the moving belt, but the obstacles are all different sizes, so it would've needed a vision system just to find them, plus a gripper synced to a moving conveyor. The indexing wheel does the same job with fewer moving parts. ••• The end goal is three of these magazines side by side with a randomizer picking which one serves up the next obstacle, so the sequence never repeats. Stay tuned for that! ••• #engineezy #engineering #mechanicalengineering #mechanisms #chromedino
