A robot hand can have touch sensors in every finger and still struggle with something as simple as screwing in a light bulb. Humans constantly make tiny adjustments without thinking about them. We feel when the threads catch, notice when the bulb starts tilting, and correct our grip before anything goes wrong. Robots can detect touch, but interpreting those signals and reacting correctly is still a major challenge. That’s why household tasks are so difficult to automate. Folding laundry, washing dishes and handling everyday objects all involve thousands of tiny adjustments that humans barely notice. Until robots can make those adjustments reliably, having one in your home is going to be a lot harder than the demos make it look. #robotichand #humanvsrobot #geminirobotics #humanoidrobot
Bomb disposal robots are built to keep humans away from danger, but Minerva's Roger is designed to go a step further. If a bomb can't be made safe, the robot can be sacrificed instead of putting a technician's life at risk. The robot is controlled remotely by a human wearing a VR headset, but it handles things like balance and recovering from a fall on its own. The operator focuses on decisions while the robot manages the fast physical reactions needed to move around. It's a different way to think about robotics in dangerous environments. Instead of trying to replace the expert, you give them a machine that can take the risks their job demands, without putting their life on the line. #bombdisposalofficer #Robotics #minerva
Boston Dynamics is rethinking what a robot hand actually needs. Instead of giving its humanoid robot five fingers, the company decided to leave the pinky out after its engineers spent a day with their own pinkies taped down, documenting what they could no longer do. The reasoning is practical. Every extra finger adds motors, weight, cost and potential failure points. So Boston Dynamics put more effort into the thumb, giving it four joints and the ability to slide along the other fingers. The hand is also designed to match human hand dimensions, so it can use existing factory tools and learn tasks by watching people. It’s a good reminder that more complicated hardware doesn't automatically make a better robot. In a factory, reliability matters just as much as dexterity. #bostondynamics #robothand #bostondynamics_robots
