Especially when you’re training for something. A marathon. Hyrox or another hybrid race. An ultra. Or any big challenge you actually care about. It’s easy to think the answer is always more. More miles. More sessions. More intensity. But sometimes the smartest move is taking something away. Dropping a run. Cutting volume. Backing off intensity. Swapping impact for lower impact work. The goal isn’t to see how much training you can survive before race day. It’s to arrive there fit enough to perform, recovered enough to use that fitness, and healthy enough to actually enjoy it. Better, not more.
1. Online coaches with zero real coaching experience. Doing a 6 week course, hiring your own coach and then repeating whatever they say doesn’t make you a good coach. There’s a huge difference between knowing information and actually being able to coach a human being. Learn how to coach people first. 2. The perfect morning and evening routine bullshit. We’re constantly being told we need to wake up, get 20 minutes of sunlight immediately, but don’t have a coffee yet. Buy the cold plunge. Journal. Meditate. Wear your blue light blocking glasses while you watch Love Island, make sure your bedroom is at the optimal temperature before bed, and apparently sun your arsehole every morning for good measure. Some of that stuff might help, but most people don’t need another list of things to optimise. They need a routine that actually fits their real life. Come live in my house where I’m usually chasing after my autistic teenager running on 2 hours sleep, a double espresso and a can of monster before 8am. 3. People shitting on other types of training. Bodybuilders hate CrossFit. CrossFitters hate bodybuilding. Runners avoiding the gym. Lifters think running will make them weak. Who gives a fuck? If someone enjoys it, it gets them moving and keeps them training, let them crack on. Apart from hitting exercise balls with drumsticks. Have you seen that? That’s some bullshit eh 4. The evidence based lifting crowd trying to optimise every single movement. I love evidence, I love to science ! But some of this has gone way too far. Stop worrying about Strength curves, moment arms, perfect resistance profiles, tiny setup changes. Pick exercises that you feel good doing, use decent technique, train hard and get stronger. You do not need a biomechanics degree before doing a hamstring curl 5. People who stink in the gym. Shower. Use deodorant. Wash your kit. That’s it. If you’re coming into a shared space and you’re absolute stinking, you’re knee sleeves could walk back to the car you’re a fucking gimp and everyone in the gym hates you btw.#onlinecoach #formandfunction #running #backyardultra #powerlifting
