A senior safety researcher at Anthropic has warned there is a greater than 10% chance AI could “kill all humans” within the next decade. Evan Hubinger, who leads Anthropic’s Alignment Science team, made the claim after fellow researcher Jacob Coxon resigned from the company, accusing leading AI firms of racing towards increasingly powerful systems without adequate safeguards. Hubinger said the risk from current AI models remains low but raised concerns about future systems capable of improving themselves, admitting that Anthropic does not yet have a clear plan for ensuring superintelligent AI remains under human control. If the people building AI are this worried about where it could lead, governments cannot afford to sit back and watch.
