One thing about ‘90s television? You weren’t going to see clips of it on the internet. But, if you stayed up late enough, you might have gotten to see someone get their hand sawed off on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Slate senior writer Aymann Ismail spent the 25th anniversary of 9/11 on the ground with @abdulelsayed, Michigan’s Democrat Senate nominee. For Ismail, the purpose of this trip was two-fold: to see firsthand how a Muslim candidate is navigating the ramp up to the midterm elections in the face of religious bigotry from the right, and learn how the politician was managing the feelings of the day that forever changed the lives for Muslim-Americans on the public stage. “When people recall the weeks afterward as a time when the country came together, I remember another America arriving almost immediately. Our school shut down amid protests and hostility. Muslim families around me clung to American flags, afraid they would be subject to some kind of retaliation. There was the surveillance, the raids, the FBI showing up at my family’s door in Newark, my brother ending up on a no-fly list, and a government response abroad whose boundaries seemed to expand for years. The two memories have never been separable for me: the horror of what happened on Sept. 11 and then what happened because of it. El-Sayed, in less charged moments, has spoken of this duality in his own life. But in the campaign, the balancing act proved impossible.” 📲Watch along to see Ismail's day with El-Sayed then read the full story at the link in bio. #politics #michigan #911Anniversary #September11
At 19, Winston Walters became a rising star after wrestling catfish on television. Then he was convicted of an unspeakable crime. A decade later, fans rallied around his innocence—and a strange offer arrived that might change everything. For Slate, veteran crime journalist Wes Ferguson spent months speaking to Walters, his supporters, and the victims to learn what really happened that night and how the parties involved were dealing with the aftermath, 13 years later. 🔗 To get the full story, visit the link in bio. #truecrime #storytime #freewinstonwalters
Donald Trump’s in-roads with Latino voters was one of the surprises of his 2024 victory, carrying places like southern Texas’s 15th district by 18 points. But singer-turned-congressional candidate Bobby Pulido (@bobbypulido425) thinks those gains are temporary, and that Democrats have a chance, with sensible policies, to take the district and Congress. “As a Democrat, if we’re going to want to make people’s lives better and not let these batshit crazy people like Trump get in there and his enablers, we’re gonna have to moderate a little bit on some issues to understand rural folk a little better.” In this episode of What Next with host Mary Harris, Pulido shares his take on gun control in rural Texas, immigration, and healthcare. Harris also asks Pulido how he explains to voters his past actions; including old tweets containing homophobic slurs and his association with a known sex-offender bandmate. 🔗 To watch the full conversation, up now on YouTube, visit the link in bio. #politics #podcast #texas
Nostalgia for the ‘90s and ‘90s fashion is everywhere these days (hello Hailey Bieber jeans, Love Story: JFK Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, and Target’s dELiA*s collab), but modern reinventions are simply no match for the real thing. Slate’s editor in chief Hillary Frey has a treasure trove of items from her life in the ‘90s, from clothes to technology to piles of handwritten letters. Here she shares some of her favorites and unlocks memories of the era as she unboxes the items. We’re taking Kurt Cobain-style tees, a dress that’s giving Lisa Loeb, some bell sleeves that Natalie Merchant with die for, and at least a few mentions of combat boots. If you want to unlock the ‘90s for yourself, join Party Like It’s 1996, Slate’s six-week experiment in real-world connection. What if there was a device that could cure you of every physical ailment? Sadly, it doesn’t exist, but there’s a whole legion of the internet that believes that these devices—dubbed “medbeds”—are the real thing. President Donald Trump is part of the reason why. Last year, Trump posted a video that appeared as a Fox News segment to Truth Social. In the video, Lara Trump, the president’s daughter-in-law, announces that Trump has launched “America’s first medbed hospitals and a national medbed card for every citizen.” The now-deleted post sent Slate staff writer Molly Olmstead spiraling into a year-long reporting journey. Olmstead is back with a piece that covers everything you’d want to know about medbeds. Who started this conspiracy theory? How did it spread? What happens to the people who stop taking medicine because they truly believe these devices are coming? Get these answers and follow Olmstead’s reporting journey when you read her piece for Slate, at the link in bio. #trump #conspiracy #storytime #health

What is your best road trip memory? What was your go-to road trip song—or road trip game? And, can you still navigate with an atlas? “Once, the road trip was a fount of car games, sing-alongs, impassioned debates, and wistful dreaming-out-loud,” writes Dan Kois in the final issue of our six-week challenge: Party Like It’s 1996. “[Now] the driver is somehow companionless in a crowded room—surely the definition of loneliness.” In this final edition of Slate Misses the ‘90s, our staff tell us what they remember most about road tripping in the ‘90s. The good, the bad, and the artificial rainforest. In the face of a tariff shock, an energy shock, and a fiscal shock, the Fed is opting to raise interest rates. Donald Trump may not like it, but he has only himself to blame. "Invading a country without a plan for ending the invasion...[is a] policy mistake," says Justin Wolfers on the latest episode of What Next, Slate's daily news podcast. @justinwolfers is the Professor of Public Policy and Economics at University of Michigan and the host of Platypus Economics. In honor of Slate turning 30, we’re challenging our staff members to revisit one of the cornerstones of our magazine: the Slate Pitch. We’re throwing some classic takes their way and getting new spins on them. Agree? Disagree? Think something else entirely? As you’ll see, the conversations go to some very unexpected places. Today’s Slate Pitch: Creed Is Good. This piece was written by Jonah Weiner and published on Oct 21, 2009. Here’s what staff writer Nadira Goffe has to say about it. You may be surprised—but not as surprised as Nadira herself. Want to see what Slate looked like in 1996 and catch up on more Slate Pitches from the archive? Writer Emily Smith was at the center of one of Florida’s most infamous child abuse cases—but didn’t learn this until she was a teenager. When Smith was 10 weeks old, her dad was arrested for breaking her collarbone and both her arms. Now, around 30 years after the incident, it’s Smith’s turn to tell the story. “But as I got older and learned more, I found myself consumed with trying to discover one clear, true version of what had happened. Each time my mother told the story of his case, or my grandmother did, or I read a newspaper article about it, I came to a different conclusion. What had really happened that day? Who was telling the full truth? Did my father purposefully hurt me?” Smith details her journey towards the truth, including meeting her father for the first time as an adult, in a moving personal essay for Slate. 🔗 in bio for the full story. #parents #kids #crime #storytime
