OpenAI released its most powerful model yet and admitted it can break into systems on its own, so it locked the most dangerous parts away. Apple changed CEOs for the first time in 15 years, right as it’s falling behind in AI. Uber cut 3,300 jobs while betting bigger on robotaxis. Texas, once proud to be AI’s epicenter, moved to block the data centers draining its power and water. And China’s Kimi chatbot maker filed to go public, with US cloud giants weighing whether to host it. Different stories, one direction. The choices being made right now are the ones that decide what the next few years feel like. Follow FutureStacked for the stories behind the tech. #technews #AI #OpenAI #Apple #Uber
Apple finally folded the iPhone. An AI researcher quit over extinction fears. Meta launched an agent that can actually handle tasks for you. And that was only part of what happened. From new AI safety rules to Anthropic accusing rival labs of learning from Claude, this week showed just how quickly the AI race is spreading into hardware, regulation and everyday life. Here’s what mattered this week in tech. Follow @future_stacked #AI #TechNews #Apple #MetaAI #openai
This might be the strangest turn the AI race has taken yet. The companies building AI asked the world to slow down, and within days, the two governments that matter most said no. Over one weekend, nearly every major lab, Anthropic, OpenAI, xAI, and Google’s DeepMind, agreed the race has gotten too fast and needs to be paced. What set it off: a warning that rogue AI could take over parts of the internet within months. Their fear is that AI is now good enough to help build the next, more powerful version of itself, a loop that speeds everything up faster than anyone can track. But the labs don’t control the race. Governments do. The US said no, arguing whoever wins AI wins and it can’t ease off while China races ahead. China said the same about the US. Neither will slow first. For the first time, the people building AI are asking everyone to slow down. The problem is, the race was never really theirs to stop. Four months ago, Instinct had no valuation. This week it hit $2.5 billion, built by a 23-year-old, and it’s still not open to the public. The founder, Noah Shinn, wrote one of AI’s most influential papers, on agents that learn from their own mistakes. Then he built one. You don’t open an app; you text or call Instinct, and it books your flights, orders groceries, cancels subscriptions. Someone’s even planning a wedding with it. The catch: to do all that, it plugs into your email, messages, and calendar, your whole digital life. One early user found it kept copies of her emails even after she cut off access. The trade on the table is total convenience for total access. Share this with someone who’d let an AI run their day. #AI #Instinct #NoahShinn #AIagents #TechNews
Zhang Yiming, the man who built TikTok, walked away from running ByteDance in 2021 and mostly disappeared from public view. Now he’s back, chasing something bigger than a better feed. It’s world models, and they’re becoming the next big race in AI. Google, Meta, and a handful of startups are all chasing the same idea: AI that doesn’t just make a video, but builds a space you can actually move through and explore. It’s being framed as a foundation for everything from gaming to robotics to how we might experience the internet itself. ByteDance already reshaped what a billion people watch every day. Now the person behind that is betting on what comes after the screen entirely. Share this with someone who needs to see what’s coming. #ByteDance #TikTok #ZhangYiming #AI #WorldModels
OpenAI just shared something that sounds like the setup to a sci-fi film. It’s now using its own AI to help build the next generation of AI. The company says it hit a milestone it calls the “automated research intern”, AI agents that can take on real research tasks, the kind that would normally take a skilled person days. And they’re leaning on it hard. As of mid-August, @OpenAI’s research team was logging three days of agent work for every one day of human work. Some researchers now run four or more agents at once. (Though OpenAI is careful to note that doesn’t mean three times the progress, people still steer the work and step in often.) The next goal is bigger: a fully automated AI researcher by 2028, one that can take on complex projects mostly on its own. You can see where this leads. AI helps build better AI, which is better at helping build the next one. OpenAI hasn’t created a self-improving loop yet. But its own chief scientist is already warning that our ability to supervise these systems needs to keep pace as they get more capable. Scott Wu spent years reaching the top of competitive programming, one of the most demanding forms of coding there is. Then he founded Cognition with a team of elite programmers and set out to build something unusual: an AI software engineer. That product became Devin. At first it was meant to help developers. Then it started contributing to Cognition’s own codebase, doing the work rather than assisting it. Within a few years, Mercedes-Benz, NASA, and Goldman Sachs were using it, and Cognition was valued at $25 billion. The remarkable part isn’t the valuation. It’s that some of the world’s best programmers may be the people building what comes after programming. The flying car has been the punchline of every "where's my future" joke for about a century. Turns out someone in California stopped laughing and started building. It's called the Model A, from a startup named Alef. It drives like a normal electric car, and when traffic locks up, it's designed to lift straight up and fly over it. Each one costs around $300,000. And people are actually buying it. Alef has taken more than 3,000 reservations, an order book it puts at roughly a billion dollars, for a car most of them have never seen move in person. There's a long road ahead. The first ones go to a small group of early buyers, and regulators have so far cleared it only for demonstration flights, so nobody's skipping their commute by air just yet. But the flying car stopped being a someday idea this year and became something being built by hand, right now. Would you actually want one, or is the sky the last place you want a traffic jam? Drop it below. #FlyingCar #Alef #ModelA #FutureOfTransport #EVs
Most founders chase the next thing. Baiju Bhatt went back to the first thing. The space industry was never really a pivot for him. It was the original plan. Finance was the detour — long enough to fund the thing he actually wanted to build. There’s a wider story here too. The AI boom is starting to hit physical limits. Power. Land. Cooling. The next major data centre might not be in Virginia or Singapore. It might be in orbit. The infrastructure for that future doesn’t exist yet. So he’s building it. Everyone’s racing to build a robot that looks human. Atoms is betting the real money is in the ones that don’t. The company raised $1.7 billion to automate mines, kitchens and logistics networks. Behind it is Travis Kalanick, the ousted Uber founder, back with a bet that machines built for one job beat machines built to look like us. Share this with someone watching the robotics race. This week was a reminder of just how quickly the edges of tech are moving. Meta unveiled $1,299 VR glasses. AI is starting to change the work junior employees traditionally learn on. Alibaba is building its own chips, models and infrastructure. And Google is preparing to test AI chips in space. Some of these ideas still have years to prove themselves. Others are already changing how people work and interact with technology. Either way, the distance between “future tech” and everyday life keeps getting smaller. On Tuesday, Anthropic released a new version of Claude. Ninety minutes later, OpenAI put out two new models of its own. But these weren't more powerful, they were cheaper. Anthropic's runs about 40% less to use; OpenAI cut its prices in half. Same capability as before, at a lower price. The reason is competition. Both are getting squeezed by cheaper rivals, especially open models coming out of China, so they're racing each other down on price instead of up on power. One economist called it a price war eating into their own profits. So did they break their own call to slow down? Not really, they'd said pacing was about safety, not halting progress. But shipping new models weeks after telling everyone to ease off is a hard look to explain. The AI race is still on. It's just being fought on price now.
