🌟 We've been preparing something special behind the scenes... There's less than a month to go until our new exhibition ’A Call to Art: William Morris and the Pre-Raphaelites’ opens its doors and we've been busy getting ready! 🍃 Designed by William Morris around 1880–81, this woven silk fabric was originally destined for the throne room of St James's Palace, London. The pattern features oak – a traditional symbol of strength and nationhood. It wasn't used at the Palace in the end as, perhaps surprisingly, Morris' proposals for the furnishings proved too costly! The Oak pattern in crimson and gold was among the most expensive fabrics sold by his Firm. 👑 The commission at St James’s Palace coincided with Morris’ turn to radical politics. He would continue to wrestle with the contradiction of making luxury goods while campaigning for a fairer society, and in private he disliked monarchy. 🎨 Intrigued? Featuring paintings, drawings, textiles, ceramics and rarely seen works from our collection, 'A Call to Art' offers a fresh look at one of the most influential movements in art, craft and design. 👀 Keep your eyes peeled for more sneak peeks and behind-the-scenes moments. 🌀 ’A Call to Art: William Morris and the Pre-Raphaelites’ Opening 23 October 2026 🎓 18–25 or a student of any age? Manufactured either by Joshua Oldfield Nicholson, Macclesfield, or by Morris & Co., Merton Abbey, London. 👀 Where are we taking this Fitz favourite? Not far, it turns out. 'The Bridesmaid' by British artist John Everett Millais is on a brief holiday from her home in gallery 2 to go on display in our new exhibition 'A Call to Art: William Morris and the Pre-Raphaelites’. 🖼️ Our team has been busy installing our latest exhibition, which explores the radical vision for the future that lies behind the romantic storytelling of British designer and activist William Morris and his circle, including Millais, Edward Burne-Jones, Elizabeth Siddal and more Pre-Raphaelite artists. 🌟 Discover paintings, drawings, textiles, ceramics and rarely seen works from our collection when ‘A Call to Art’ opens on 23 October. 🔗 Visit our website to book your ticket now 🎓 18–25 or a student of any age? 🌟 Something very exciting is coming... We're getting closer and closer to the opening of our new exhibition ’A Call to Art: William Morris and the Pre-Raphaelites’ and we’ve been busy getting ready! Dante Gabriel Rossetti was fascinated by Joan of Arc and painted her many times in his lifetime. In this 1882 version he shows the medieval heroine with a fierce grip on her sword – a young woman defiant and powerful ready to lead a French military campaign. 🏹 Rossetti shows her courage and heroism in a way we rarely see when looking at paintings of women – instead of passive, Joan is the model of female defiance. 🎨 Intrigued?
