We spent the morning at Chef Wong a dim sum restaurant that is not just about great food but preserving heritage and carrying on a late father’s legacy. Doris & Chung are the owner operators of Chef Wong, a restaurant that started as a hobby business after Doris’s Dad (Chef Wong) fell sick with cancer. What started as Chef Wong folding dumplings with his buddies soon became an operation that required an actual restaurant with Doris & Chung quitting their corporate roles to learn the art of dim sum. They now work alongside their Dad’s friends- aunties and uncles who laugh and work together crafting dim sum for the Huntingdale community. Dim sum has been a staple in my life ever since I was a kid. Mum and Dad worked 7 days running their Chinese takeaway but would always keep Sunday morning free so we could come together as a family along with our grandparents on both sides, for yum cha. These dishes are indelibly linked to my memories of family and togetherness so it was incredibly special to see how they’re made and to learn of the part they play in Doris, Chung and their family’s life.
