Wine windows (buchette del vino) date back to the 1500s, when families in Florence sold wine directly from their homes. In the 1600s, they were also used during the plague, allowing wine to be sold without close contact between the seller and customer. Over the centuries, many of these little windows fell out of use or were sealed up. Then COVID brought them back to life, as restaurants began using them to serve wine, coffee, gelato and more while keeping their distance. And now? They’re a Florentine tradition. 🍷🇮🇹
