የመስከረም ወርን የኢትዮዽያዊያን የባህል ወር ብለን በ ኦንቴሪዮ ካናዳ እያከበርን ባለንበት ሰአት አዝማሪ እና በርበሬ የሚሉ ሁለት ቃላት በ ኦክስፎርድ መዝገበ ቃላት መካተታቸውን መስማታችን ደስታችንን ይበልጥ ጨምሮታል። አማርኛ ዓለምአቀፋዊ ካባ መደረቡን ቀጥሏል።🙏❤️ As we celebrate Meskerem (መስከረም) and Ethiopian heritage here in Ontario, Canada, there is another wonderful reason for Ethiopians around the world to celebrate: two words deeply rooted in Ethiopian culture have recently been added to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). The September 2026 OED update includes “azmari” (አዝማሪ) and “berbere” (በርበሬ) — two words that carry with them important parts of Ethiopia’s musical, literary, and culinary heritage. 🎶 አዝማሪ — Azmari An azmari (አዝማሪ) is traditionally an Ethiopian poet, singer, and musician who performs verses, often improvising them while accompanying the performance with a traditional string instrument. The OED records English usage of azmari going back to 1865. The word comes from Amharic and is associated with Ethiopia’s long tradition of oral poetry, music, storytelling, humour, and social commentary. The azmari tradition reminds us that Ethiopian cultural heritage has long valued not only written history, but also spoken poetry, music, memory, and creativity. 🌶️ በርበሬ — Berbere Berbere (በርበሬ) is one of the defining spice blends of Ethiopian and Eritrean cuisine. It commonly includes chilli peppers along with spices such as coriander, fenugreek, garlic, ginger, and others, with recipes varying across families and regions.
