The Ferries Were Only Supposed to Be Temporary The plan was to run the ferries until the bridges could be built across the Sound. The bridges never came. The ferries stayed. Today it's the largest ferry system in the country: 21 ferries, 20 terminals, and more than 20 million riders in 2025. Some routes are numbered state highways.
