People come to me every day, terrified. A child peeking around the corner of a doorway and then disappearing. A woman standing in the hallway. A man on the side of the road who vanishes into the mist. I understand the fear completely. Something uninvited has entered your space, your worldview has just been shaken, and it’s a reminder of death itself. I was sixteen the first time it happened to me. I looked in the rearview mirror of my car and an old man was sitting in the back seat. The moment I turned to look, he was gone. Here’s what I think most people miss in that moment of fear: you are dealing with another person. Not something evil. How many people do you actually pass on the street each day who mean you harm? Almost none. The dead are no different. What these encounters really are, more often than not, is evidence that life continues after the body dies. It isn’t the only evidence, either. Out-of-body and near-death experiences bring back information the person could not have obtained through any physical means. Extrasensory perception does the same. Terminal lucidity, when a person whose brain can no longer function the way it once did is suddenly able to speak clearly with loved ones in their final hours, as if perfectly healed, points to the same thing. Ghosts are nothing to be afraid of. Often they are loved ones checking in on us. Sometimes they are someone who needs help themselves.
