Whether you’ve seen this video before or not, please let’s take it as a reminder to not EXPECT OR DEMAND free labor from others, especially if it’s difficult for them to make an income. I became documented around this time last year and I now have the privilege of knowing I’ll get a check for my work on a consistent basis. I know that if I lose my job, I can apply to another one. The fear of being houseless again is not as prevalent as it used to be… But I get activated, y’all! Like, there were times when I was struggling to pay for rent, and there were organizations that owed me from a presentation I did 6 MONTHS BEFORE (and they got offended when I demanded to get paid), or some that never paid me! AND THEY CAME BACK TO REQUEST ME TO VOLUNTEER, AS IF THEY HAD NOT GOTTEN ENOUGH FROM ME! Did I really have to tell them that my bank account was in the negative and I was struggling? Did I have to remind them I didn’t have a work permit and my business was not just for fun? And maybe not asking for free labor from community members is one of the reasons why UndocuMental Health isn’t thriving as a nonprofit… but I’d rather close it down before asking those in vulnerable positions to continue to volunteer, knowing that they’ve been doing that for much of their lives… Anyway… I know I have asked for favors and will probably continue to do so… but I’ll never EXPECT OR DEMAND you all to work for free, and if I do… feel free to tell me to fuck off. P.S. When I made this video I had to stop volunteering as a therapist because I could not afford to continue to volunteer and not only did I feel like a failure, but I truly love being a therapist and that was taken away from me.
