I drew a sad face on an egg and I'm not sorry. The one with the smiley face is Sunny Queen, and this week the consumer watchdog took it and eleven other egg companies to court over how they allegedly worked together. It's all unproven and Sunny Queen says it will fight it. But the court case isn't really what's bugging me. It's that I can stand in front of a wall of cartons with a cute hen on every lid and have no idea who's behind any of them. Where I live, a lot of eggs get sold from a stall at the end of a driveway with an honesty box. You can see the chooks. You can ask how they live. Nobody's hiding behind a logo. I've known Kate for years and I had no idea she was Marmalade Kate. We'd lost touch for a bit because life got very busy for both of us, and today we finally caught up. She told me about a Seville orange tree in a church yard in Bellingen, and I ended up learning something I can't stop thinking about. I grew up near Coffs, so Bellingen feels like home to me. And somewhere in that conversation she mentioned she won a blue ribbon for her marmalade. Years of knowing her, and I had no idea.
