Believe it or not, there is a very good chance that you are trying to do too much in your training sessions. If you find you’re not getting the results you want, I highly encourage you to strip you dogs schedule back and try this instead… THE 3 S’s or KISSS APPROACH 1. KEEP IT SHORT. Your sessions should be 1-3 minutes for new behaviours and then you can slowly increase the duration as your dog increases in fluency/confidence. 2. KEEP IT SIMPLE. In a given session, only practice one, maybe two things at a time so the dog knows the topic…this is also why we don’t learn math, English and a foreign language in a single class; they each hold their own space! 3. KEEP IT SWEET! The goal should always be to have fun, create as many wins as you can, and end on a positive note early enough to leave your dog wanting more! I had no idea what I was signing up for when I first got Sensi. And if I could go back, I probably would not do this again. That being said, the amount this dog has taught me about compassion, patience and creating space for others is undeniable. This is a really hard journey to be on but it is one that has made my life richer. I think one of the biggest things I had to work on besides all the mechanics of working with a reactive dog was the mindset change of learning how to navigate my new reality. Mindset is also something that many of my clients struggle with as they work to meet their dogs where they’re at and build a life together. This is not what socialising looks like. This is not what socialising looks like. This is NOT what socialising looks like! We are broken records on the internet for a reason and that reason is, there is a MUCH better and more considerate way to set your dog up for success than allowing your dog to rush up to dogs and people they don’t know and vice versa! The fallout that follows for all parties involved is simply not worth it and those of that are working to set theirs dogs up to be neutral in distracting situations will not be held by “friendly dogs” constantly rushing up to their dog! Let’s all do a better job at creating space for each other.
