If you grew up in the ’80s, chances are at least one of these movies was part of your childhood. In 2026, some of the biggest and most memorable films of 1986 are officially turning 40! Top Gun had everybody feeling the need for speed. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off made skipping school look like the greatest adventure ever. The Karate Kid Part II took Daniel and Mr. Miyagi to Okinawa, while Aliens gave us one of the most unforgettable sci-fi sequels ever. We also got The Transformers: The Movie, The Golden Child, Howard the Duck and Pretty in Pink. And 1986 gave us even more classics, including Stand by Me, Labyrinth, Little Shop of Horrors, Crocodile Dundee, An American Tail, Short Circuit, Flight of the Navigator, Big Trouble in Little China, The Color of Money, Platoon, Highlander, Peggy Sue Got Married, Back to School and Three Amigos! VHS tapes, packed movie theaters, video stores and Friday-night rentals. Four decades later, so many of these movies still take us right back to the ’80s.

The football world has lost one of its most recognizable legends. Mike Ditka was Chicago Bears football through and through, a Hall of Famer whose legacy stretched from the field to the sidelines and across generations of NFL fans. Ditka first made his mark with the Bears as a hard-nosed tight end in the 1960s. He was the NFL Rookie of the Year in 1961 and helped redefine what the tight end position could be. His playing career eventually earned him a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. But for an entire generation, he will forever be remembered simply as “Da Coach.” Ditka returned to Chicago as head coach in 1982 and helped build one of the most unforgettable teams in NFL history. The legendary 1985 Chicago Bears finished 15-1, dominated their way through the playoffs, and defeated the New England Patriots 46-10 in Super Bowl XX. With Walter Payton, Jim McMahon, Mike Singletary, William “The Refrigerator” Perry, Richard Dent and that legendary defense, the ’85 Bears became bigger than football. Ditka’s fiery personality, trademark mustache, sweater vests and unmistakable Chicago toughness made him a sports icon. Even decades later, you could say “Da Bears” or “Da Coach,” and football fans knew exactly who you were talking about. From Hall of Fame player to Super Bowl champion coach, Mike Ditka became part of the identity and history of Chicago football. Rest in peace to a Bears legend. Saturday nights in the ’80s just felt different. The living room became the place to be, the TV was glowing, the snacks were ready, and the whole family could spend the evening laughing together. There was no streaming, no scrolling through hundreds of choices, and no watching an entire season in one night. You knew what time your favorites came on, and if you missed them, you really missed them. Even the commercials, network promos, and that familiar NBC peacock became part of the experience. By 1986, Saturday night television was packed with comedy, drama, memorable characters, and shows that became part of our weekly routine. It was appointment television in every sense. Take me back to an ’80s Saturday night, when staying home and watching TV was actually part of the weekend plans.
