I’m not entirely sure why I made these slides. Maybe they’re for the people who have been to Belize and fallen in love with it like I have. Maybe they’re for someone who understands the science better than I ever will. Maybe they’ll somehow reach someone with the money, influence or connections to help turn good ideas into real ones. I honestly have no idea. I just know that people who have been to Belize care about Belize. I love San Pedro. I love Caye Caulker. I love the water, the beautiful people we’ve met there and the friends we now have on those islands. So when I see sargassum covering those shores, I don’t just see an ugly beach. I think about the people who live there, the businesses that depend on that water, and how much work goes into fighting something that simply comes back. Last year, Capt. Jimmy told us that people in Mexico were making bricks from sargassum. For whatever reason, my brain kept that little fact. Then this weekend I started asking questions, and one question became ten. What if sargassum isn’t only waste? What if some of it can become a resource? What if renewable energy, desalination, water storage, sargassum processing and economic development don’t always have to be treated as completely separate conversations? And here’s the important part: people are already working on this. Belizeans, researchers, businesses and government agencies, along with organizations including the Inter-American Development Bank, World Bank, Green Climate Fund and others, are already putting real work and real money into sargassum solutions, clean energy, water infrastructure and coastal resilience. So no, I don’t think I solved anything. I’m a graphic designer/housewife in Arkansas, USA who loves Belize, got curious and followed a thought much farther than I intended. But maybe the right person sees this. Maybe someone who loves Belize shares it with someone who knows someone. Maybe a scientist sees a flaw. Maybe an engineer sees a possibility. Maybe someone with the resources to help sees pieces that could actually fit together. I don’t know. I just think it’s worth letting the idea leave my head. Because people who have been to Belize care about Belize. And sometimes caring is where things begin. #Belize #Sargassum #worldbank #sustainableenergy #water
