It was an honor to have Dr. Jennifer Lincoln on the show this week discussing her fabulous new book, The Birth Book! This book covers everything to do with, you guessed it, giving birth. As an OB hospitalist, Dr. Lincoln shared evidence-based practices and her own insider tips to help you through your birthing journey. We asked her why she wrote this book, and here’s what she said. The Present Illness is available wherever you get your podcasts. New episodes every Friday (also available on YT). #thebirthbook #ob #birthing #obstetrics #booktok

It can be really hard to speak up for ourselves in healthcare settings. In The Birth Book, Dr. Lincoln gives multiple examples of how to advocate for yourself and speak up about what you need when you’re giving birth. For example, if you’re getting sent home from triage but you don’t think you should be, she suggests asking for another opinion (“Is there any way you can run this by another provider here? I’m feeling like another person’s in on this would help me feel confident in this plan.”), asking for more time, or asking to speak with higher up (“O am worried me going home now is a safety issue for me and my baby. Who is the right person to address this?”). There’s a whole table on what to do if you don’t think you’re being heard, for example “I don’t understand why we are doing xyz. Can you please explain?” Or “My OB-GYN is not listening to me and it’s really making this process too hard. Am I able to have a different doctor assigned to me?” The Present Illness is available wherever you get your podcasts. Babies are naturally born without enough Vitamin K, which means they are at risk for severe bleeds. Vitamin K given at birth significantly reduces the risk of brain bleeds in newborns. Yet there are people out there trying to convince people to refuse Vitamin K for their newborn, and a recent ProPublica article indicates their campaigns are successful and we’re now seeing more newborns suffering with brain bleeds. Dr. Lincoln discusses this in her new book, The Birth Book, which is an amazing resource for anyone who is going to be birthing or supporting someone who is.
