Stay tuned for the e-book summary for this e-summit (which will also be free to access)! Big thank you to Luciana Smaldore and our sci-comm project cohort putting big work into making this happen!!! A conference like this would generally cost you thousands of dollars to register, in addition to whatever the travel costs are to get you to it - there’s obviously value to in-person conferences, but when they’re in the city centers they often are, at the prices they usually are, a lot of people get left out. This is the problem our free e-conference is trying to address. Interested in supporting the initiative? Please share! #beautytok #cosmeticchemist #skincaretok #haircare

Hi, I’m a PhD candidate, also a cosmetic scientist - I study the impact of environmental misinformation on environmental outcomes, through the lens of beauty. What I’ve been seeing? Misinformation, even when it’s coming from good intentions, which reeaaallllllly doesn’t matter as much as people think when it comes to outcomes, seems to make environmental outcomes worse. Microplastic misinformation about cosmetics formulations is just the tip of the iceberg for plastic misinformation. On the environment side, there are also ideas around plastic packaging being inherently worse for the environment… looking at totality of product impacts, in beauty, many times products packaged in plastic actually have lower total impacts. End consequence? We sometimes switch to materials that increase overall impact, while failing to address the bigger drivers of harm, like overconsumption. In the process, we get tunnel vision on plastic pollution and lose sight of other critical environmental issues, climate change. There is soooo much microplastic misinformation out there. If you want loads more detail on the realities of microplastic, I have a series of posts here + an e-book chapter, with expert commentary by Dr. Oli Jones, who specifically researches microplastics. Find the resources here: Truth in Beauty E-Book, find Dr. Jones’ section on microplastics starting at pg17: https://docsend.com/view/zp3rp83nzuqavbw9 My latest post on microplastics specific to cosmetic formulations: https://www.instagram.com/p/DTBIljcDrXn/?img_index=1 (Sorry for my spelling error 🥲) My summary of general microplastic misinformation: https://www.instagram.com/p/DHJE4qSOOEl/?img_index=1 Comments for references 👇 #microplastics #plasticfree #science #cosmetics #greenliving

so... we don’t have a spoonful of microplastics in our brains? No. Many of you may have seen the recent Guardian (and Vox) posts about microplastic uncertainty... did you also see the response?... It's sad when media platforms try to do the right thing, by correcting their past misinformation, they're met with this kind of backlash. The incentives really stacked against the truth right now… FYI, discounting something solely based on funding source or affiliation is actually the opposite of critical thinking. The real issue here isn’t about microplastics, but how broken science journalism has become. Bad science spreads fast, good science struggles to be heard. Careful corrections often get treated like conspiracy. What is abundantly clear is the need for thoughtful science communication, clearer discussion of uncertainty, and a serious effort to rebuild public trust. Want more detail on microplastics? Oliver Jones PhD (another scientist who researches this stuff) recently contributed to our 2025 Truth in Beauty E-Summit with a presentation on Microplastics: Media Headlines VS Science. He did a phenomenal job breaking down where the science actually is & the massive issues of science sensationalism in the microplastic research arena. You can watch his presentation in the summit replay here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FB6UXGbZs7A&t=3940s Luciana Smaldore also converted his presentation into a written summary in our summit e-book. If you’d prefer to read his commentary, you can find it here (starting on pg 17) https://docsend.com/view/zp3rp83nzuqavbw9 #microplastics #plasticfree #microplastic #science #health
