Rote memorization is not the way through your checkride, nor the way through your aviation career. ✈️ Knowing your material and where to find it, is what’s going to prepare you not only for your instrument checkride, but also for the real world. ✅ Make sure you’re prepared for what’s to come! 💯 #aviationdaily #instrumenttraining #instrumentcheckride #studentpilot #instrumentrating

If you’ve never hear about strakes, here’s something new for you today. ✈️ Strakes are, actually, vortex generators, and they both basically try to keep the air flowing right where we want it to create a safer aircraft. Vortex generators are typically found grouped in a row on the wing of an aircraft, sometimes they’re on the tail, really in front of any location that could do with more airflow. The primary purpose of a vortex generator is the reintroduce that airflow over or under a control surface to help the stability of an aircraft at a high AOA and low airspeed (like during TO and landing). A strake does the same thing, but it’s generally just 1 larger fin placed on the fuselage, nacelle (a.k.a. a chine) or empennage (a.k.a. a ventral strake). The TBM has them on the pilot’s side of the fwd fuselage in front of the wings to help reinforce airflow over the root of the wing. They actually added it there after the 700 and 850 series as those aircraft tended to stall with a left wing drop due to the spiraling slipstream from the prop. The TBM, also, has ventral strakes on the belly to help with directional stability (yaw) and to reduce Dutch rolls by keeping the tail from “wagging” in the air at high altitudes. Think of them as vertical stabilizers. The strakes on nacelles are referred to as chines, and they help create airflow over the part of the wing that is being blocked by the bulky engine. #aerodynamics #aviationknowledge #strake #vortexgenerator #tbm
