Loading - It’s one of ‘those’ 🙃 For some reason there is the fixation to re-train loading behaviour in one session. As if not getting the horse in the box is the ultimate failure. Loading is such a complex behaviour. It requires so many different small behaviours: - Go - Stop - Turn - Stay - Be happy to be locked in a confined space on your own with no escape while it also moves and you have no idea where it’s going 😅 My client has followed the program, she’s taken the time needed, implemented adjustments as required and most importantly, we go at the horse’s pace. Not ours. Outcome - She’s getting the results 🥳🥳 Keep up the good work guys! Please stop blaming yourself Owning a horse doesn’t mean that you automatically know everything there is about training and caring for horses In fact - no one knows it all. There’s still so much research is still to cover and investigate 🔬 But my main point is - just because it’s not working - doesn’t make you a failure. It just means that, that particular technique or approach isn’t best suited for you and your horse It’s my job to carry out that assessment and make informed choices to provide you with the best working approach, to set you up for success. I adore this clip from last summer 🤩 Working to establish target behaviour to a cone to assist with handling multiple horses in and out the gateway. By sheer fluke or perhaps horse preference we ended up with an ear touch to the cone 🫣 overall it doesn’t affect the training goal so if the horse prefers it - we roll with it! 😅👌🏻 Finding useful ways to incorporate positive and negative reinforcement training into traditional equestrianism is fun! There’s a real a sense of accomplishment to both you and your horse. Ethical training of horses doesn’t just mean using positive reinforcement It’s about finding the best method for that horse-human combination Sometimes known as using the LIMA (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive) approach along side learning theory.
