STRAAT presents ART IS NOT A CRIME. Henry Chalfant: Capturing graffiti culture, NYC, 1977–1987. The exhibition celebrates the legacy of photographer and documentary maker Henry Chalfant, whose work continues to shape graffiti culture to this day. It is the first major retrospective exhibition in the Netherlands to approach graffiti from its own documentary core. Life-size photographs of painted New York subway trains pull you straight into the city that sparked a global movement. Chalfant photographed with an eye for scale, quality, and exposure time, building a monumental archive that places the visitor right in the middle of the action. In 1984, Chalfant brought his photographs to Amsterdam. For many Dutch writers, it was their first real window into New York's graffiti scene. Their influence soon spread far beyond the city, helping shape an international cultural movement. ART IS NOT A CRIME shows how Henry Chalfant captured graffiti culture at true scale, and helped lay the foundation for the Dutch graffiti scene.
