These kinds of tasks might look simple at first glance, but there is a lot happening beneath the surface. Matching objects to pictures, sorting colored tokens, placing shapes on a grid, recalling familiar faces, and organizing everyday items are all carefully chosen to target the skills our patients actually need in their daily lives. We are working on attention by asking the patient to focus, visually scan, and stay with a task long enough to finish it. We are working on memory through repetition, recognition, and recall of people, objects, and routines. We are building problem solving when patients figure out where something belongs, catch their mistakes, or make choices between options. There is also a strong focus on executive functioning through organizing, sequencing, and completing tasks from start to finish. What makes these activities especially valuable is how functional they are. Identifying a microwave, sorting laundry, or recognizing therapy staff connects directly to real life. These are the same skills patients need to navigate their environment, participate in routines, and stay as safe and independent as possible. They are also easy to adapt. The same activity can be simplified with fewer choices or more cues, or made more challenging by adding steps, distractions, or memory demands. That flexibility allows us to meet each patient exactly where they are on that day. And just as important, these tasks are engaging. The colors, the movement, the familiarity all help patients stay involved without feeling overwhelmed. When someone is engaged, they are more likely to participate, and that is where the real progress happens. This is what cognitive therapy looks like. It is practical, intentional, and always connected back to real life. #speechlanguagepathologist #speechlanguagepathology #medslp #dementia
