Racial gaslighting: a way to silence the voices of Black employees to preserve the ease and comfort of white employees. Once we can recognise it, we can start to call it out for what it is. #shereendaniels #hr #antiracism #racialeducation #racismatwork #workculture #workequality #business

I remember when Kemi Badenoch (UK Womens & Equalities Minister) once said that the UK is the best place to be for Black people and I can't help but contrast that with the lived experience of so many of us, as highlighted by the treatment of Diane Abbot. When overt acts of racism occur, l pay more attention to the aftermath, and this video explains why. My official statement, if you like, regarding how Diane Abbot is being treated, is this: The egregious nature of the comments made against Diane Abbott - suggesting violence and expressing hatred specifically towards Black women - demands unequivocal condemnation. Yet in the aftermath, we have even more to learn about how Diane is treated, what she deems appropriate restitution (not the Prime Minister) and what the government should be held accountable for. After all, Frank Hester is not only the largest Tory donor in the UK, but he has also benefited financially from over £500 million in government contracts. Additionally, the fact that Diane Abbott was excluded from speaking about her experiences and viewpoints in Parliament highlights the systematic disdain for Black women's voices, even at the highest echelons of our government. Anti-Blackness in the UK is widespread and deeply ingrained, impacting all facets of our society, from our daily experiences to how we are treated as citizens and employees within institutions and organizations. Any assertions to the contrary are insulting and offensive. The reluctance to acknowledge and address the systemic racism and anti-Blackness within these structures by making excuses, feigning ignorance, maintaining a lack of awareness, or protecting perpetrators - does a disservice to all, particularly those directly impacted. Let's not pretend that the treatment of Diane Abbott is an isolated incident. Rather than wringing our hands and espousing shock and horror, I would implore us all to look within our immediate spheres of influence to ask how we too are rooting out anti-Blackness - whether covert or overt. #dianeabbot #ukgovernment #antiracism #racismintheuk #whiteprivilege

Understanding systemic racism is understanding that there are consistent favourable outcomes for some, and consistent unfavourable outcomes for others in regards to race. It is how our society and its institutions are structured and replicated and how people act and interact within them. This can include criminal justice systems, political power, social support and health care, but abo unquestioned social systems. And within those social systems, systemic racism is more challenging for white people to identify because these systems assume white superiority individually, ideologically and institutionally. White people may not see themselves as overtly racist, but they still benefit from a social system that privileges white faces, voices, perspectives etc. #systemicracism #covertracism #shereendaniels #antiracism #workplaceculture #inequality #workequality #opression #whitesupremacy #businessmanagement #racialinjustice
