In this situation, the woman herself told me that her husband had always taken care of her. He provided a home, bought her a car while she was in The Gambia, and never asked her for her money, even when she was earning. Then he brought her to Europe because he wanted them to build their life together. Now that she is working and the cost of living is high, he has asked for her support. Does that mean her money automatically belongs to him? No. But does marriage also involve mercy, gratitude, generosity and supporting each other when life becomes difficult? Absolutely. Sometimes you don’t wait for your husband to ask. You see his struggle and say: “My love, how can I help?” And the same goes for men. When your wife needs you, don’t only talk about your rights—show her mercy and responsibility. Marriage is not a competition between a husband and wife. She was upset because her husband had asked her to support him financially. Her view was that, as a wife, the husband should be responsible for taking care of the family, especially because this is what she was used to in The Gambia. But after moving to France, their situation changed. The cost of living became much higher, and after she started working, her husband asked her to contribute. I shared my honest thoughts with her: What do you believe marriage really means? Marriage can come with responsibilities, expectations, culture and different beliefs. But when two people build a life together, should they see each other only as husband and wife with separate responsibilities, or also as partners who support each other when life becomes difficult? She Realized Too Late: When Disrespect Destroys a Marriage 😭😭 A woman reached out to me for advice about a difficult situation in her marriage. She explained that her husband had stopped speaking to her for almost two months and had also stopped sending her his usual allowance. She told me that he had changed and was no longer the person he used to be. Before giving advice, I wanted to understand what had happened. As she shared more of her story, I began to understand why her husband had become so distant. She admitted that she had repeatedly spoken to him disrespectfully, behaved badly towards him and said things that deeply hurt him. But she also realized her mistakes and genuinely wanted to change. She was ready to do whatever she could to repair the marriage. I decided to speak with her husband as well. He spoke to me calmly and respectfully and explained his side of the story. I was honestly surprised by some of the things I heard and saw. I asked him to forgive her, especially because she had recognized her mistakes and wanted to change. He agreed to try. He contacted her, just as he had promised me. But after everything that had happened, he told me that he could no longer continue the marriage in the same way. He said that he had tried, but he could no longer give her the love and respect he once had for her as his wife. When I spoke to the woman again, she accepted the outcome. She admitted that her own actions had played a major role in what happened and accepted the consequences. 💭 My reminder to every sister and brother: No matter how angry or hurt you may feel, be careful with your words and your behavior towards your spouse. Repeated disrespect, insults and hurtful behavior can create wounds that are not always easy to repair. Sometimes we only realize the value of something after we have pushed it too far. Marriage requires Sabr (patience), respect, communication, forgiveness and humility. When problems come, try to talk, listen and correct your mistakes before the situation becomes too difficult to repair. And remember: Allah tells us to be patient and to do what is right. May Allah guide us all to treat our spouses with kindness, respect and mercy.
