Last night hit different. I went to the New York City premiere of #ElBodeguero and honestly wasn’t prepared for how much it would affect me. The film is based on a true story of a Dominican bodega owner in Philadelphia who migrated here, built everything from nothing, and had his entire family taken from him. My father-in-law owned a bodega, and my husband grew up working in it as a kid. If you’re Dominican, you already know, there’s always a bodeguero in the family. It’s just part of who we are. So yeah, I felt this one. #ReyRomero, Vanessa Hernández, and #JohnnieMercedes were there before the screening just hanging with everyone. No Hollywood energy, just genuinely warm, funny, real people who clearly pour their hearts into this story. We took photos, laughed, talked about the real events behind the film. It felt like community. Low budget. #Independentfilm #Dominican made. And it goes toe to toe with anything a major studio has put out. Big shoutout to my girl @Micky for the invite 🙏🏽 I needed this more than I knew. Go support El Bodeguero thanks to @Micki Fernandez Shoutout to Por Amor al Cine for bringing this story to life and giving our community a voice on screen. 🎬 bringing this story to life the right way. 🎬
