You may hear a lawyer say: “The prosecution entered a nolle prosequi.” And you're just sitting there like “Oga, what exactly did you people just say?” 😂 Here is the simple meaning Nolle prosequi is a formal decision by the prosecution to discontinue a criminal proceeding. In everyday English, the prosecution is saying, “We are no longer continuing with this particular criminal case.” But wait does that automatically mean the accused person has been declared innocent? NO. And this is where many people misunderstand what happened. Stopping or discontinuing a criminal proceeding is not necessarily the same thing as a court hearing the case fully and finding the accused not guilty. So if you hear: “Nolle Prosequi!” Don't immediately conclude: “Case dismissed! He has been proven innocent!” The legal consequences can depend on who entered it, the applicable law, the stage of the proceedings, and the circumstances of the case. This is why understanding legal terms matters. Because sometimes one Latin phrase can completely change how you understand what just happened in court. Now let me ask you What other legal word or phrase have you heard lawyers use that sounded like pure Latin and left you completely confused? #LegalAwareness #viral #millionviews #StayInformed #fyp
Imagine this You rent a shop. You spend months building your business. You install shelves. You paint the place. You put in a signboard. You stock the shop with 20 MILLION worth of goods. Business is finally picking up. Then one morning, the landlord tells you: “I have sold the building.” 😳 The new owner is now saying: “I bought the property. I want you to leave.” And you're standing there thinking: “But I have a valid tenancy!” Not necessarily. What happens can depend on important things such as the terms of your tenancy agreement, the length and nature of the tenancy, whether the new owner is bound by the existing arrangement, and the applicable tenancy/property law. This is why renting a shop is not just about: “How much is the rent?” Before putting millions into a rented business premises, you should also be asking: 👉 What happens if the landlord sells the property? 👉 What happens to my tenancy if ownership changes? 👉 Is there a written tenancy agreement? 👉 What happens to improvements I make to the premises? 👉 What notice am I entitled to if I have to leave? Because imagine building a business worth millions around a location and then discovering that your biggest investment was never properly protected on paper. Business Owners, Save this. And send it to that friend who keeps saying: “It's just a shop. I'll sort out the agreement later.” Ignorance of the law is not an excuse. #fyp #StayInformed #millionviews #viral #LegalAwareness
Are you Standing as a Witness in Court? Then please, get ready to give evidence A lot of people think that once they enter the witness box, they can just start telling the judge everything they know. No. It doesn’t work that way. In court, evidence may be presented in different ways. For example, where a document or piece of evidence is not being disputed by the opposing party, it may be tendered through the bar without necessarily calling a witness to establish it. That is what lawyers refer to as non-contentious evidence; in simple terms, the other side is not seriously challenging the evidence. But where the evidence is being disputed or challenged, it may need to be established through a witness and that is where YOU may find yourself in the witness box😂 Your lawyer will lead you through what is called Examination-in-chief. This is where your lawyer asks you questions to enable you tell the court your side of the story and establish the facts relevant to your case. Then comes the part many people fear CROSS-EXAMINATION! The opposing lawyer gets the opportunity to question you. And please, don't enter the witness box thinking: "Let me just explain everything to this lawyer." Calm down. Listen carefully to every question. Answer only what you are asked. Don't argue with the lawyer. Don't volunteer unnecessary information. Don't guess. If you don't know, say you don't know. If you don't remember, say you don't remember. And most importantly, tell the truth. Because the witness box is not the place to come and perform motivational speaking. 😂 Your job is to assist the court in arriving at the truth based on the evidence before it. So if you have been called to stand as a witness in court, don't just prepare your clothes. Prepare your mind too. Have you ever witnessed cross-examination in court? What was the experience like? #LegalAwareness #viral #millionviews ##fyp #StayInformed
