Part of the appeal of antiheroes is simple: They take action. They know they can "just do things." Too many good guys spend the story reacting to someone else’s decisions. Audiences like active protagonists. We usually like protagonists who make things happen, rather than just have things happen to them. There was a fascinating book titled "The Bestseller Code" in which the authors analyzed a bunch of plots and crunched a bunch of numbers and found that verbs like “do,” “need,” and “want” appeared twice as often in bestselling fictional novels compared with those that didn’t make the bestseller list. Interestingly, “dislike,” “suppose,” and “wish” appear more often in non-bestsellers. Those terms have more to do with thinking and feeling and preferences rather than action. Compelling protagonists influence and shape the people and the world around them, rather than merely reacting to external events.
