On August 4, 1892, Fall River, Massachusetts woke up to one of America's most infamous murders. Around 11am, 32-year-old Borden reportedly found her father, Andrew Borden, dead on the sitting room sofa. He'd been struck 10 or 11 times in the face with a hatchet. Upstairs, her stepmother Abby had been hit 18 or 19 times. She had been dead for over an hour. The house had been tense. Andrew was a wealthy but notoriously frugal banker. Lizzie and her older sister Emma felt trapped, resentful of Abby, and worried about their inheritance. That morning, the family's maid Bridget Sullivan was the only other person home. She heard Lizzie scream for her from downstairs. Police found no forced entry, no robbery, no bloody clothes. But Lizzie's behavior was strange. Her alibis kept changing. She burned a dress days later, saying it had paint on it. And that famous rhyme was born: " Lizzie Borden took an axe..." She was arrested, tried in June 1893, and acquitted. The jury took just 90 minutes. As a respectable, church-going, unmarried woman of the Victorian era, many simply could not believe she could do it. The prosecution also had a weak, entirely circumstantial case. Lizzie lived the rest of her life in Fall River as an outcast. She died in 1927, just days after Emma. So did she do it? The case is still debated by historians today. What do you think - guilty or not guilty? #lizzieborden #halloween #spookyseason #historytok #netflix
