Here’s an evening in my life. Living independently isn’t always easy. It’s slower, tougher, and takes more out of me, but there’s a different kind of strength in doing it on my own 💪❤️ #spinalcordinjury #ketlerstrong #fyp

Today I used functional electrical stimulation (FES), which uses small electrical impulses to activate the nerves and muscles in my legs. Because of my spinal cord injury, my brain isn’t currently able to voluntarily send the signals needed to move my legs, so the stimulation creates that movement for me. Watching my legs move after six years of being completely still was honestly such an emotional experience. 🥹 And this isn’t just about seeing my legs move. FES can be used as a form of exercise and rehabilitation for people with paralysis. By repeatedly activating muscles that otherwise aren’t being used, it can help with things like maintaining muscle mass and strength, improving circulation, supporting cardiovascular fitness, and helping maintain bone health. Researchers are also studying how combining electrical stimulation with repetitive movement and rehabilitation may contribute to longer-term functional improvements. So no, this video doesn’t mean I can suddenly move my legs or walk again. The movement you’re seeing is coming from the electrical stimulation. But after six years, seeing my legs move again feels pretty damn incredible. ❤️ It’s a reminder that even when my body can’t do something voluntarily right now, there are still ways to activate those muscles and keep working toward what might be possible in the future. And who knows what the future holds. I’m going to keep working, keep learning, and keep giving my body every opportunity to improve. I’ll be posting a video tomorrow talking more about the study behind this and what researchers are learning about FES and spinal cord injury, so stay tuned ❤️😁 #ketlerstrong #spinalcordinjury #fyp
Spent last week in Huntington Beach with @Wheel the World and @Surf City USA talking about accessible travel and sharing my experiences travelling the world as a wheelchair user! It was incredible speaking to over 100 people, including city leaders, and seeing the steps Huntington Beach is taking to make travel more inclusive. Huntington Beach is now verified accessible by @wheeltheworld and became the first city in California to achieve @KultureCity Sensory Inclusive Certification. From accessible hotels and restaurants to beach mats, pools, the pier and so much more, I got to experience Huntington Beach through my eyes and see what accessible travel can look like. Hopefully other cities across North America take notice and continue making travel more accessible for everyone!

Recently, I’ve been getting more into men’s fashion, so today I’m heading over to @UNIQLO Canada to check out the store that just opened up in St. Vital Centre in Winnipeg. I tried on four new outfits, so let me know which one you like the best 👀 Whether you’re looking for everyday basics, something more elevated, or pieces for different seasons, I guarantee you’ll find something you like there! #UNIQLOAmbassador #UNIQLO #LifeWear
Life is all about perspective. There was a time when I looked at everything my spinal cord injury had changed and only saw what I had lost. I felt like a burden, pushed people away, compared my life to the one I had before, and wondered what my future could possibly look like. Changing the way I looked at things didn’t change what happened to me. It changed what I saw in front of me. I started seeing the people who stayed. The opportunities I still had. The things my body could do. The goals I could still chase. And eventually, I found myself regaining independence, living on my own, fully supporting myself, and building a life I’m genuinely proud of. Sometimes, you don’t need a different life. You just need a different perspective. ❤️ #ketlerstrong #spinalcordinjury #fyp
