I cried before opening this box because I knew if I didn’t I would cry during the unboxing. I clearly didn’t cry enough because I lost it the minute I saw them. It represents missed birthdays (Nates last year), missed games, canceled signings, moving release dates. It’s canceled plans and letting people down, it’s questioning yourself over and over again. Late nights. Lonely days. It’s laughter. Tears. It’s a lot of deleting and adding and plotting. It’s a book that’s outlived the assistant who told me not to give up amidst the journey while she fought her own terminal illness knowing she would never see it to completion. It’s my grandpa and his Norse heritage and him getting to read my crazed notes before passing. It’s the readers who held my hand and went from strangers to family and told me I could do it when I needed it the most and understood when I had to go disappear for a while. So when people say it’s just a book. It’s not. It’s so much more than a story. All books are heavy because they carry the weight of the person who took the time to write the words down and create something out of nothing. A book carries more than the weight of the story it holds—it carries the author as well. So next time you hold one know that it has a story of it’s own a way it came about, a journey it took to get to that shelf, it started with a flicker of a thought and became a brand new magnificent world.
