Some days I just miss Italy like it was a person. I miss the little streets, the sunsets, the food, the sound of the language, but more than anything, I miss what Italy means to my family. Getting to visit the places my family came from and seeing them through my grandpa’s eyes is something I’ll never forget. He took us to where he grew up, showed us the house he used to live in, the places he used to go, where he used to fish, and even the fountains he used to drink from as a kid. Hearing his stories while standing in the very places that made him who he is made everything feel so much more real. It was like getting to step into a little piece of his childhood and, somehow, a little piece of my own roots too. I think that’s why I miss Italy so much—not just because it’s beautiful, but because when I was there, I felt connected to something bigger than myself. To my family, to where we came from, and to memories that existed long before I did.
