Skin colour is a terrible reason to divide ourselves, especially when you look at our evolutionary history. Our early hominin ancestors were most likely covered in dark body hair with relatively lightly pigmented skin underneath. As our ancestors lost much of that body hair and evolved efficient sweating in equatorial Africa, strongly pigmented skin evolved as protection against intense UV radiation. Later, as human populations migrated into regions with lower UV levels, lighter skin evolved independently in several populations. So the colours we attach so much social meaning to are actually remarkably flexible evolutionary adaptations. White Europeans ultimately have African ancestors who were dark-skinned. Go back even further, and the ancestors of all of us likely had lighter skin beneath fur. Human pigmentation has changed repeatedly over evolutionary time. We are one species, one tangled family tree, adapting to different environments. If you want to read the anthropology behind this, look up Nina Jablonski & George Chaplin: • “The Evolution of Human Skin Coloration” — Journal of Human Evolution, 2000 • “Human Skin Pigmentation as an Adaptation to UV Radiation” — PNAS, 2010 • Nina Jablonski’s later reviews on the evolution of human skin pigmentation The science is much more interesting than the racial boxes we invented. #HumanEvolution #Anthropology #SkinColour #Evolution #ScienceTok
