Scary music!
I’ve seen a lot of posts lately about Lady Gaga’s performance at the Super Bowl halftime show. It seems that there is some controversy and that some people think that she was not singing on beat. Those people are crazy. SOURCE: me. I have a PhD in music theory, teach at the college level, and transcribed to this myself. Thanks for visiting! #musictheory #musicnerd #musiceducation #ladygaga #superbowl
Let’s clarify what polyphonic perception is. There have been a huge number of posts lately about this phenomenon. However, mostly these posts misunderstand what it really is. This type of perception is not simply hearing the various instruments within a musical texture. It requires the ability to hear multiple separate simultaneous melodies, and this kind of composition is relatively unusual in modern popular music. To be clear, I think that it is fantastic that people are listening closely to music and hearing the many different layers in a musical texture. That is a skill that one can cultivate and improve over time. While many people hear music in many different ways, it is definitely not the case that the ability to hear multiple layers in music is a special talent that is only possessed by a few. It is a skill that musicians learn all the time and is not necessarily an indicator of neurodiversity (such as ADHD) as many on this clock app have claimed. To be fair, it may be the case that some people have the ability to do this better than others, but there is much more research that needs to be done to really confirm that conclusion. In the meantime, remember that polyphonic perception is the perception of multiple simultaneous melodies, and not just multiple instruments. ##musictheorynerd##musictok##musicnerd##musictheory
