I have been following the debate on social media following comments made by ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba regarding South Africa’s commemoration of Mozambique’s first President, Samora Machel. His remarks have generated considerable discussion. However, I believe some historical context is necessary. WHO BUILT AND FUNDED THE MONUMENT? 🇲🇿 The Samora Machel Monument is located in Mbuzini, Mpumalanga, South Africa, near the site where the aircraft carrying President Samora Machel crashed on 19 October 1986. The monument was funded by the South African government under President Nelson Mandela, reportedly costing approximately R1.5 million. It was officially inaugurated on 19 January 1999, during Mandela’s presidency. This was a decision made by South Africa’s own democratic government to recognise Machel’s contribution to the struggle against apartheid. DOES MOZAMBIQUE COMMEMORATE SAMORA MACHEL EVERY YEAR? 🇲🇿 YES, EVERY SINGLE YEAR! Mozambique commemorates the anniversary of President Samora Machel’s death annually on 19 October. Commemorations also take place in South Africa, particularly during significant anniversaries. For example: 📅 2021 – 35th anniversary 📅 2026 – 40th anniversary 📅 2031 – 45th anniversary 📅 2036 – 50th anniversary These milestones do not mean Samora Machel is remembered only every five years. The difference is simply the scale and location of the commemorations. WHY DOES SOUTH AFRICA HONOUR SAMORA MACHEL? 🇲🇿🤝🇿🇦 During apartheid, Mozambique supported South African liberation movements, including the African National Congress (ANC). That support came at an enormous cost, as Mozambique suffered military attacks, destabilisation and tremendous human suffering. This shared liberation history explains why South Africa chose to honour Mozambique’s first President. MY FINAL POINT Herman Mashaba is entitled to his opinion, and nobody should be forced to commemorate someone they do not wish to honour. However, we must remember that the monument was established by South Africa’s own democratically elected government under Nelson Mandela. Mozambique does not depend on South Africa to honour Samora Machel. We commemorate our first President in our own country every year. The monument at Mbuzini represents remembrance, solidarity and the historical relationship between our two neighbouring nations. We can disagree about historical figures without ignoring the history that connects our countries. HISTORY IS HISTORY. WE CANNOT CHANGE IT, BUT WE CAN LEARN FROM IT. 🇲🇿✊🏿🇿🇦 #SamoraMachel #Mozambique #SouthAfrica #NelsonMandela #HermanMashaba

Years ago, I watched a documentary about Dubai that taught me an important lesson about infrastructure development: “Build it, and they will come.” Mozambique invested in two modern airports: ✈️ Nacala International Airport – Nampula Province. ✈️ Filipe Jacinto Nyusi Airport – Gaza Province. Both have faced criticism for attracting limited airline operations. Many questioned whether the money should have been spent on roads, hospitals and schools instead. I understand those concerns, but development also requires long-term vision. 🇲🇿🇪🇹 NOW LOOK AT NACALA! Ethiopian Airlines is set to introduce three weekly flights connecting Nacala to Addis Ababa, one of Africa’s largest international aviation hubs. This could open new opportunities for tourism, trade, investment and economic growth in northern Mozambique. Imagine if the opportunity arrived today and Mozambique had no suitable airport. We would need years to build one. Instead, the infrastructure is already there! Of course, building infrastructure alone does not guarantee success. Good planning, responsible spending and attracting investment remain essential. But we cannot build tomorrow’s Mozambique by thinking only about today. As I always say: “Development is not an event; it is a process, and it has no destination.” 🇲🇿 💬 WHAT DO YOU THINK? Were these airports a waste of money, or investments in Mozambique’s future? #Mozambique 🇲🇿 #Nacala #EthiopianAirlines #AddisAbaba #MozambiqueDevelopment Danny ::: I can also make it even shorter (around 150 words) for a TikTok caption that encourages more comments and debate.

MOZAMBIQUE’S INDUSTRIALISATION IS GAINING MOMENTUM! 🇲🇿 Chinese investment group China Yuxiao has announced plans to invest US$600 MILLION in two industrial parks in Nacala, Nampula Province! 🏗️ WHAT’S COMING? The project will cover 512 hectares and include FOUR major factories: 🔋 1. Graphite Anode Factory – Producing materials for lithium-ion batteries. 🏭 2. Titanium Dioxide Factory – Processing Mozambique’s mineral resources. 🏗️ 3. Lime & Clinker Factory – Supporting construction and manufacturing. 🌱 4. Fertiliser Factory – Supporting agricultural production. 🚀 The project also aims to attract 20–30 additional industries! 🇲🇿 THIS INVESTOR IS ALREADY IN MOZAMBIQUE! China Yuxiao has already invested approximately US$200 MILLION in a graphite processing facility in Nipepe and currently employs around 1,500 workers, according to the company. 📅 CONSTRUCTION PREPARATION EXPECTED TO BEGIN IN JANUARY 2027! 💼 WHY DOES THIS MATTER? ✅ Potential job creation for Mozambicans. ✅ More minerals processed locally. ✅ New industrial opportunities. ✅ Increased exports and tax revenues. ✅ Stronger economic development. 🇲🇿 MY MESSAGE IS SIMPLE! Mozambique must move beyond exporting raw materials and start manufacturing higher-value products at home! But announcements must become reality. We will follow this project and track its progress! DEVELOPMENT IS NOT AN EVENT; IT IS A PROCESS AND HAS NO DESTINATION! 🇲🇿 #Mozambique #Nacala #ChinaYuxiao #MozambiqueDevelopment #Industrialisation
