As we approach the end of Season 1 of The Practical People Manager Podcast, I’ve been reflecting on everything the last few months have brought. What began as an idea—to create honest, practical conversations for line managers—has grown into something I’m incredibly proud of. I’ve had the privilege of sitting down with some brilliant guests and exploring topics that truly matter in the workplace, including mental health, neurodiversity, menopause, employment law, conflict, leadership and those difficult conversations managers often feel unprepared for. The podcast has reached listeners across Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube, sparked conversations online and encouraged people to think differently about how they lead and support others. It has also challenged me personally. I’ve learned how to host, listen, ask better questions and become more comfortable behind the microphone—although there is always more to learn! Most importantly, it has reinforced something I have always believed: Line managers don’t need to have all the answers. They need the confidence, awareness and practical tools to have better conversations with their people. Thank you to every guest who has generously shared their knowledge and experiences, and to everyone who has listened, watched, commented, shared an episode or sent me feedback. Season 1 may be approaching its end, but this is only the beginning for The Practical People Manager. I’m excited about what comes next. 🎙️ #expert #PeopleManagement #Leadership #LineManagers #Podcast

Are we sometimes too rigid with policy? Policies matter. They give managers a framework, help people understand what to expect and support consistent decisions. But when a difficult situation arises, it can be tempting to reach straight for the procedure before asking what is happening between the people involved. Could a conversation help? Is there an opportunity to listen, understand the concerns and address the issue early? In this clip, Pete Colby and I discuss the value of looking beyond the policy and using judgment. Following a process and treating people as individuals can go hand in hand. How do you help managers know when to pause and have the conversation? #PeopleManagement #WorkplaceConflict #Mediation #HR #podcast

We cannot control everything that happens in someone’s life—but we can influence their experience at work. As Pete Colby highlights in this clip, most people spend a significant part of their lives working. That gives employers and line managers a huge opportunity to create an environment that supports positive mental health, wellbeing and productivity. Sometimes it is the simple things that make the greatest difference: ✅ Treating people with respect ✅ Noticing when someone is struggling ✅ Creating space for honest conversations ✅ Addressing conflict early ✅ Building a culture where people feel safe and valued We may not be able to fix everything—but we can make work a better place to be. What could you do today to improve someone’s experience at work? 🎙️ Watch the full conversation with Pete on The Practical People Manager Podcast—available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube. #PeopleManagement #LineManagers #WorkplaceWellbeing #MentalHealthAtWork #EmployeeExperience
