Both staunch feminists, neither of us wanted a traditional wedding. Since we couldn’t marry legally anyway, we didn’t call it a wedding, or even a commitment ceremony. I believe we called it a “hooptie”. 🤣 We did want the opportunity to have our friends and family come together to support us as we made this public declaration of commitment. Looking back, it was the most wedding-like experience we’ve had, even though we got legally married in California in 2008 (3 weeks before Prop 8), and then the Supreme Court declared us legally married a half dozen years after that. In 1994, we were young and under-resourced, so we created the event on a small budget. We held it on a sunny Sunday afternoon in the mirror-lined dance studio on the top floor of ArtsBank in Philadelphia. With the help of Alison Bechdel, we made the invitations. Friends in the culinary industry who were my co-workers at MANNA made our food for us. Another friend from MANNA made the cake. My boss made the cake topper. Another friend and co-worker handled the flowers. Another friend got us balloons. Friends from the Anna Crusis Feminist Choir (where Jenn & I met) sang for us. My friend from the softball team took photos. My dear friend and mentor and former boss served as our officiant — which really meant she facilitated the proceedings. Family members and friends came from Texas and Oklahoma and Arizona and Illinois to celebrate, one family driving 24 hours in a van with two small children. My dad stood and told a story and gave us his blessing. My sister-in-law, overwhelmed with tears of joy, stood and spoke and welcomed Jenn into our family. Our first dance was to a 1940 jazz/pop called “I Could Write a Book”. We did Cotton Eyed Joe during the reception. It was a lovely day, and a lovely day to remember, 32 years later. 💕💕 #lesbiansover60🌈 #lesbianwedding #anniversary #lesbianlifecoach #commitmentceremony
