#cessna #training #pilot #172 #sovietunion In 1987, a 19-year-old German pilot managed to fly a small Cessna straight through Soviet air defences and land in the heart of Moscow, just metres from Red Square. His name was Mathias Rust. With only around 50 flight hours, he modified a rented Cessna 172 to carry extra fuel. On May 28, he departed Helsinki, turned off his radio and disappeared from Finnish radar. Authorities initially believed he had crashed and launched a search. But Rust was heading directly into Soviet airspace. Soviet radar detected his aircraft, and several missile units tracked his movements. Fighter jets were sent to investigate, but no order to shoot him down was given. Due to confusion and misidentification, his Cessna was repeatedly classified as a friendly aircraft. At around 7 PM, Rust reached Moscow. He descended over the city and landed on a bridge near St. Basil’s Cathedral, right beside Red Square. Remarkably, trolleybus wires that could have prevented the landing had been removed for maintenance earlier that day. The incident became a massive embarrassment for the Soviet military. The defence minister, the head of air defence and numerous senior officers lost their positions. Rust was sentenced to four years in a Soviet labour camp but was released after approximately 14 months. And the aircraft that made history? The Cessna 172, registration D-ECJB, is now on display at the German Museum of Technology in Berlin. One teenager. One small aircraft. And one of the most extraordinary breaches of air defence in aviation history.
