If we are right-handed then we would need to start on the left side of the paper as we make it across the page and that is midline crossing in writing. For some children, not being able to cross the midline would look something like switching the writing hand or even moving the whole body and arm as a unit which could lead to inefficient writing. 🙂 Typically kids master this skill around age 8 or 9 when they have effective postural control and as well as good use and coordination of both sides of the body. Here’s an activity you can incorporate as a warm-up before a writing task. Start with big movements to maximise crossing the midline and using the fingertip to provide tactile feedback then do it with a writing tool to integrate the skill. 😉 #midlinecrossing #motorcoordination #occupationaltherapy #handwriting #finemotorskills #pediatricoccupationaltherapy #pediatricot #bilateralcoordination #playbasedlearning #handexercise #writingtipsandtricks #pediatrictherapy #childdevelopment #developmentalplay #playideas #learningthroughplay #playandlearn #clayactivities #occupationaltherapist #occupationaltherapystudent #occupationaltherapyassistant

✨ What if a child’s first step toward eating… wasn’t a bite, but a touch? We worked with a 5-year-old with #ARFID whose food avoidance got so severe he had seizures. His journey reminded us how powerful early sensory experiences are 🍽️💛 When kids struggle with how things feel: sticky, wet, or just unfamiliar, it can be overwhelming. Not just in play… but at mealtimes too. That’s why we start with PLAY. Scooping, squishing, smearing, exploring food in a low-pressure, sensory-safe way 💦🖐️ #sensoryplay #feedingtherapy #ARFID #occupationaltherapy #tamariki #messyplay #kaiissacred #childdevelopment #playbasedlearning #tiktoknewzealand

Handwriting doesn’t just start with a pencil, it starts with the brain and body working together. ✨ In this reel, we move through different foundational skills that prepare a child to write: ✅ Use of clay to builds finger strength, bilateral coordination, tactile awareness and proprioceptive feedback ✅ Finger tracing to support spatial awareness, motor planning and visual-motor integration while removing cognitive load ✅ Pen writing task brings it all together All foundational skills in this video are essential for children who find writing effortful or overwhelming. 🤗 Just like we warm up our bodies for sport, we can warm up the hands and eyes to prepare for writing success. 😊 An OT just doesn’t come up with an activity, we also think about purposeful preparation. 💕 #inhandmanipulation #finemotorskills #occupationaltherapy #handwriting #finemotorskills #pediatricoccupationaltherapy #pediatricot #otdiaries #playbasedlearning #handexercise #writingtipsandtricks #childdevelopment #developmentalplay #playideas #learningthroughplay #playandlearn #clayactivities #occupationaltherapist #occupationaltherapystudent #occupationaltherapyassistant #NZOccupationalTherapy #aotearoatherapist #OccupationalTherapyNZ #PaediatricOT #NZSpecialNeeds #KiwiMums #ParentingInNZ #NeurodiversityNZ
