EXPLANATION‼️👇 A lot of times we lean or crane our heads forward (think tech neck) while we’re singing to *reach* for certain notes. This throws our body out of alignment and ends up making singing just that little bit harder. Here I’m providing resistance for Aidan and Connor by pushing, very lightly, on the back of their heads to remind them to keep their heads up and their ears over their shoulders. - A way you can practice this on your own is to find a blank wall and stand up against it with the back of your head, your shoulders, and your butt touching the wall all at the same time. Your feet can be a a few inches away from the wall for stabiltiy. Now sing a phrase and try to keep your head from pulling away from the wall. Have questions about singing? EXPLANATION‼️ 👇 Usually when a singer comes to me with a vocal challenge, I’d say close to 90% of the time it has something to do with THE TONGUE!! Here, this young man came with a bit of depression in the back of his tongue or “tongue root”. This exercise is great for showing that the tongue root being engaged or that “swallowed” feeling can be the thing that is getting the way of a free and resonant sound. It’s important to note that this isn’t a cure all exercise. If a singer comes in with an overly bright, spread sound, this would be the LAST exercise I would do with them. There is no cookie cutter way to approach teaching singing. Each singer has unique challenges and learns a little differently.
