Join my community for more in-depth breakdowns. Link in BIO! . Obviously the success of this technique relies on a good photograph! . A lot of the time in the Film Poster industry we will manipulate photographs or heavily edit them in many different ways to get to the concept we have in mind - it all depends on the mood of the narrative we’re going for. . Most of the time when building movie posters I throw a temporary black and white adjustment layer on top so I’m seeing values and composition before dealing with color. . For the first step I’d usually go in a mask it manually rather than using the ‘remove background’ feature which is great for quick blocking out and roughing, but I’d go back and redo the mask for final output. . Create a colored bounce light in Photoshop! . This technique works best with an image that already has a hard directional light source. This setup is non-destructive so you can easily make edits to the color. Even better if you convert the bloom light to a smart object before applying the Gaussian blur so you can also adjust blur value if needed. . Join my community for deeper movie poster breakdowns. Graphic designers - I use this method all the time when compositing and building scenes in movie posters or matte painting. This also works well for removing trees from skies etc. Sometimes when the image is very complex and goes over multiple colors, I’ll do it in stages. I’ll hide the selection by clicking command + H so I can see what I’m doing better, paint on the mask, then deselect the marching ants and repeat for multiple areas on the image.
