2006 was such a good time to be an X-Men fan. For those of you who’ve been following along, you already know how deep my love for X-Men runs. . X-Men: The Official Game had just dropped, The Last Stand was hitting theaters, and for me it felt like X-Men was everywhere. Now, nearly 20 years later, popping this UMD into a PSP and watching Wolverine fight his way through the forest looking for Jean takes me right back to that summer. But what really hits me watching it now is Hugh Jackman. . He first put on the claws in 2000. I was a kid. Now I’m the grown-up, and somehow Hugh is still the Wolverine I picture in my head when I think of the character. . That’s a LONG time to inhabit a role — and even crazier to think about how many of us essentially grew up alongside his version of Logan. The voice, the look, the attitude… for an entire generation, he simply became Wolverine. And after all these years, I think it’s only fitting: . Some games don’t take me back to one specific memory — they take me back to an entire era. Killzone 3 is one of those games. . This just feels like peak PS3 to me. The Helghast, those glowing red eyes, the heavy gunplay, brutal melee, jetpacks, massive set pieces — everything about it felt designed to show off what that generation could do. . And 2011 was such a specific moment in gaming. 3D TVs were supposed to be the future (LOL, but also the TV in my bedroom still supports 3D, although I haven't used it in years), PlayStation Move was everywhere, and Sony was even letting you play Killzone 3 with the Sharpshooter attachment. Looking back now, I kind of love how ambitious and slightly ridiculous all of it was. . That said, underneath all the tech and spectacle was just a really satisfying shooter. There was a weight to Killzone that always made it feel different from everything else. A few more days with Gears of War: E-Day and yeah… I still feel the same. GEARS IS SO BACK! . Now that E-Day is officially out, I picked up the standard case to go alongside my SteelBook — because apparently owning one copy of a game is too reasonable for me — and I’ve continued loving my time with it. . The more I play, the more it reminds me of that first Gears. There’s a heaviness and brutality to the combat that just feels right. Whether I’m revving up the Lancer and chainsawing through Locust or lining up a Longshot headshot, I keep finding those little moments that make me grin like an idiot. . And the story continues to pull me in. I’m genuinely rooting for Marcus and Dom, and watching the COG try to make sense of this nightmare unfolding around them has made Emergence Day feel like more than just a piece of Gears lore we’ve heard about for the last 20 years. . I know there’s been some backlash around the game, and everyone’s entitled to their opinion. But sometimes you have to tune out the noise and just play the thing for yourself. . If you’re an Xbox player — and especially if you’ve ever loved Gears — I really think this one deserves your time. I’m still playing, still enjoying it, and still finding excuses to rev that chainsaw. GEARS IS SO BACK, BABY! I’ve been loving my time with Gears of War: E-Day during early access. . The combat has that weight I want from Gears, the visuals look incredible — especially on an 85-inch screen — and multiplayer already feels like coming home. . I’m still early enough that I don’t want to make any huge declarations, but the story has me genuinely invested so far. Going back to Emergence Day and spending this much time with Marcus and Dom again just feels right. Finding hidden collectibles has been another highlight. Hunting down COG tags immediately takes me back to doing the same thing in the original game. . And hearing Marcus Fenix’s voice regularly in my life again? Healing. I’ve also caught myself saying “NICE” in that gravelly Marcus voice way more often than I should when I’m not even playing. . The Gears of War obsession continues, and Xbox absolutely NAILED this one. . I’m a sucker for limited-edition controllers, especially when they’re tied to a franchise that’s meant so much to me over the years. And with E-Day taking us back to where it all began, this one feels particularly special. . The cracked, battle-worn finish, the Crimson Omen, the transparent red X button, and even the little COG tag on the back. I LOVE when this much attention goes into the details. . Between the Collector’s Edition and now this controller, it’s been a pretty great week to be a Gears fan. I bought an Xbox 360 memory card before I even owned an Xbox 360. And it was all because of Gears of War. I was a little late to the party, first discovering Gears in 2009 when a buddy introduced me to the game. I was immediately hooked. The only problem? I didn't own a 360. So I played wherever I could. Friends' houses, the local game store, my sister's boyfriend's house. I knew exactly who had a copy, and if I was going over, you better believe I was bringing that memory card. . Fast forward to September 2011. I had just finished my senior year of high school, and Gears of War 3 was finally here. . I remember being completely consumed by this game. I couldn't put it down, but the closer I got to the end, the more I found myself wishing it would just keep going. After years of following Marcus and Delta Squad, I wasn't ready to say goodbye. . Looking back, there's something strangely emotional about it. Gears had been with me through some of my most formative teenage years, and here I was, stepping into adulthood just as Marcus and company were bringing their own journey to a close. In a way, we were both finishing one chapter and getting ready for whatever came next. . Gears of War: E-Day is almost here — and this Collector’s Edition is exactly the kind of thing I love seeing for a franchise this special. . The centerpiece is obviously the massive 15-inch Marcus and Dom statue, but I’m also a sucker for the smaller details: the custom SteelBook, COG tags, art print and packaging that actually feels designed to be displayed rather than tossed aside. . Gears has been one of my favorite franchises for nearly two decades, so getting to crack this open right as we head back to Emergence Day feels pretty damn good. Jak 3 had pretty much everything sixth-grade me thought was cool. . I was full of prepubescent angst, and Jak’s gruff attitude, huge arsenal and willingness to throw himself into basically any fight made him feel like the perfect video game hero. Jak II had already turned the series into the darker, action-heavy world I really fell in love with, so Jak 3 felt like the natural next step. . One of my buddies got the game a few days before I did, so I spent those afternoons at his house watching him play while flipping through the strategy guide and mentally preparing for when I finally got my own copy that weekend. . I also loved how much the game leaned into vehicles and the Wasteland. Looking back, it feels like you can already see the DNA of Jak X: Combat Racing starting to take shape. Some games you remember because you owned them. Marvel Nemesis I remember because I practically lived at Game Crazy just to play the demo. . Back when it came out, my local store had it running on Xbox and I’d stop in constantly after school. Spider-Man was my main, and I’d challenge pretty much anyone willing to pick up the other controller. Half the time that meant patiently waiting while some other kid hogged the machine until I finally got my turn. . I didn’t actually own the game until years later, when I picked up a copy for Nintendo GameCube — and it’s still one of my favorites to go back to. . The story is simple, but there’s something so satisfying about the combat and how distinct all the characters feel.
