A little piece of 17th-century London history 🍷 * This is a glass prunt, once part of a Römer glass, a style of drinking vessel popular in the 16th and 17th centuries. Römer glasses are instantly recognisable by these raised, raspberry like bumps, known as prunts, fused onto the surface of the glass. * But they weren’t just decorative. In a time when people often ate greasy meats with their hands, prunts gave extra grip, stopping the glass from slipping whilst they drank their wine. Practical design meets craftsmanship. * Over centuries, the glass has weathered and softened, leaving behind this beautifully tactile fragment, a small reminder of everyday life in London, hundreds of years ago. * Watch until the end to see a Museum example Römer glass. * #mudmarkldn #17thcenturyhistory #romerglass #londonmudlarking #prunt

A silver hammered penny from the reign of Edward III (1327–1377). * Nearly 700 years ago, coins like this would have passed through the hands of merchants, craftsmen, labourers, and sailors in Medieval London. The city was crowded, noisy, and fast growing, a place of timber houses, open markets, river trade, and constant movement along the Thames. * This penny would have been real money in a working city, spent on food, drink, river crossings, or daily wages, at a time when London was both a royal capital and a gritty port town. * It survived plague years, war, fire, and centuries of change, worn thin by use and time. Lost, forgotten, and now found again, it carries the quiet weight of all those moments it once witnessed. * #mudmarkldn #edwardiii #medievallondon #hammeredcoin #silvercoin

A fragment from a Bellarmine jug, recovered from the foreshore of the Thames. These stoneware bottles were made in the Rhineland, especially around Frechen, and widely exported to England during the 16th and 17th centuries. * The moulded medallion shows the coat of arms of Amsterdam, identifiable by the three vertical St Andrew’s crosses and crowned shield. Amsterdam was a major trading hub at the time, which explains why its arms appear on these export wares. * Bellarmine jugs were sturdy, salt glazed stoneware vessels used for storing and transporting liquids such as beer, wine, and spirits. Built tough for trade, and well over 350 years later, still surviving in the mud of the Thames. * Always amazing to hold a piece of early modern European trade history in your hand. * #mudmarkldn #liquidhistory #bellarminejug #thamesmudlark #mudlarking
