On Saturday, dozens of amateur (and a few professional) aviators took homemade aircrafts to the skies for mere seconds before sailing into the Mississippi River at Bohemian Flats Park in Red Bull Flugtag. Translating to “flying day” in German, Flugtag has lifted off in the Twin Cities twice before, with one flight in the 2010 event at Harriet Island sailing 207 feet to beat a previous world record. Though none of the crafts bested the current record of 257.5 feet, teams brought the highlights of Minnesota, including SPAM in the skies, enough loon and gray duck crafts to form a flock, an homage to Prince, and the second wreck of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald, which won the people’s choice award for the favorite aircraft. #redbullflugtag #redbullgivesyouwings #mpls #thingstodo

A new exhibit, Paris Couture, opens Oct. 4 at Minneapolis Institute of Art, tracing more than a century of haute couture through the designers, garments, and craftsmanship that shaped the art form. See more than 80 masterpieces up close.  The exhibit takes viewers through the golden age of Paris couture, the postwar reign of names including Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, and Cristóbal Balenciaga, and the late-20th-century revival that continues to influence fashion today. “You have to be able to see the embroidery. You have to be able to see the seams,” says Max Bryant, the James Ford Bell associate curator of European decorative arts and sculpture at Mia. “You have to see the way that the bias cut creates the ripples of the fabric as it falls.” These garments, he says, were ultimately made to be experienced in three dimensions.  #hautecouture #minneapolis #fashionexhibit #pariscouture
