Welcome to the Citadelle Laferrière—one of the most enduring symbols of Haiti’s resilience, freedom, and unwavering spirit. Perched high above Cap-Haïtien, this extraordinary mountaintop fortress was constructed by formerly enslaved Haitians following the Haitian Revolution to protect the newly independent nation from a potential French invasion. Commissioned by King Henri Christophe, it remains the largest fortress in the Americas, with towering stone walls, hundreds of cannons, and an ingenious design built to withstand even the most formidable siege—though it was never called upon in battle. Today, the Citadelle stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a remarkable testament to the determination, ingenuity, and strength of a people who fought for and secured their freedom. Every stone tells a story of sacrifice, perseverance, and national pride. Reaching the fortress is an adventure in itself, requiring more than an hour’s climb on foot or the option of traveling by horseback or motorcycle. But once you arrive, the breathtaking panoramic views and profound historical significance make every step worthwhile. If you truly want to understand Haiti beyond its headlines, the Citadelle Laferrière is an unforgettable destination that deserves a place at the top of your itinerary. #Haiti #visithaiti🇭🇹

Haiti has long been portrayed through a narrow lens, with much of the media focusing on its challenges while overlooking the extraordinary beauty that exists beyond the headlines. Decades of external interference and internal political instability have undoubtedly taken a toll on parts of the country, but Haiti remains a land of breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and hidden gems waiting to be discovered. One of my intentions for this trip was to showcase a different side of Haiti—the beauty that is often unseen and rarely celebrated. First stop: Île-à-Rat, a stunning, uninhabited island just a 45-minute boat ride from the coast of Cap-Haïtien. With powdery white-sand #beaches and crystal-clear, aqua-blue waters, this little piece of paradise felt welcoming in more ways than one. It was also the first of three beaches we explored during our day on the water. 🌴💙 #Haiti is so much more than the images we are accustomed to seeing. Stay tuned for more. Would you visit? 🇭🇹

Cadras Beach — also known as Sunset Beach or Paradise #Beach — is one of northern Haiti’s hidden gems. 🌴🇭🇹 Tucked away near Labadee and #CapHaïtien, this tranquil, secluded beach is framed by lush green mountains and blessed with crystal-clear turquoise waters and soft, golden sand. Just a scenic 20-minute boat ride from Labadee, Cadras feels like a world away from the ordinary. One of its most unique features is the natural freshwater springs that flow from the mountains and meet the Caribbean Sea at various points along the shoreline — creating a refreshing contrast between cool mountain water and the warm turquoise ocean. Of the three beaches we visited during our beach-hopping adventure, Cadras was, without a doubt, my absolute favorite. There’s something incredibly special about discovering places like this — quiet, untouched, and rarely seen beyond the postcard version of Haiti. Would you add Cadras Beach to your #Haiti itinerary? 🇭🇹🌊
