This was a huge moment for me… 14 years ago I became the first ever DJ to perform on the BBC Proms I was fairly nervous before going on stage, mostly being worried about any mistakes being comitted to film & being broadcast on BBC1! But I was in the best company. This show was actually at the end of a week’s tour with the amazing @nyo_gb, conducted by Vladimir Jurowski, so we were quite comfortably in the flow of performing the piece A lot of people assume this was the premier of Concerto For Turntables, when actually I’d started performing it in 2009! I was first performing it with the orchestra on a backing track, which I triggered on a CDJ. The first time I performed it fully live was with @julesbuckleymusic & Heritage Orchestra in Brighton in 2010. The National Youth Orchestra heard about the piece, and asked about performing it for their tour that year, which happened to coincide with their Proms performance - so more by accident rather than design, I broke into the Proms! But I’m hugely indebited to the Proms for allowing me in. It was a big talking point at the time, and may have been seen as something of a gamble in classical circles. It even got @gabrielprokofiev and I onto BBC Breakfast! But it was very well received. Got great reviews in the Independent & the Guardian, and kickstarted a whole extra side of DJing for me, performing this piece & others with so many orchestras in so many countries around the world Plus for 20 sweet minutes, I was all over BBC1! So thank you @gabrielprokofiev for writing this wonderful piece & all the others Will Dutta for commissioning the Concerto in the first place And to @djyodauk for diving in & giving those first brilliant performances back in 2005/6. #classical #classicalmusic #orchestralmusic #turntablism #turntablist #scratching #scratchdj
